ARM & HAMMER SAL SODA CONClNTltATID Stevenson-Truman Meeting May Result In Fireworks By JACK BELL WASHINGTON V President Truman said Thursday that every thing necessary to obtain a Demo cratie victory will come under dis cussion when Gov. Adlai Steven- eon meets with rum and his cabi net here next week. He told a news conference the questions it will include, among other things, what part he should take in the campaign. Since Truman obviously Is r'ar lnsr to get in some licks at the Re ,, publicans, Stevenson may find him self confronted with the. duficult task of suggesting that the Presi dent take a back seat. The Demo cratic nominee has been at some pains to avoid close identification With the Truman administration. Truman said he invited Steven son to the White House since Ste . venson had suggested to him in Chicago, at the time of the Demo cratic national convention, that such a meeting would be very fine thing... He saio the White House lun cheon will be attended by Sen. John J. Sparkman of Alabama, the vice presidential nominee, and by Vice President Alben W. Barkley.- In a confidential tone, the Presi dent told the newsmen he would have supported Barkley for the Presidential nomination bad Bark ley remained in the race. (Barkley. pulled out of- the race after a group of labor union lead erg publicly called him "too old." He is 74.) Truman "went on 'to - say he thought the convention picked the best possible men and men who can be elected. On other political subjects, the president: 1. Voiced his support of W. Stu art Symington for election as Mis souri senator over GOP James P. Kern. While the President backed State Attorney General J. E. (Buck) Taylor in the primary election Tuesday, he told his news confer ence he is just as iona oi Symington. Truman said he voted for Taylor because he was in a frame of mind to vote for him. He said Taylor's defeat did not affect his own standing in Missouri. The hist remark was made di rectly to Duke Snoop, Kansas City Etar reporter, who had referred to the defeat ol Taylor as a ' beating lor Truman. The President said no, he had noi taken a beating. 3. Said he was glad his frequent critic. Gov. James F. Byrnes of South Carolina, had been con verted. This was a reference to the fact that Byrnes Wednesday urged fhe South Carolina Democratic conven tion to back the Etevenson-Spark-man ticket. In 1948, South Carolina gave its electoral vote to a States Richts ticket running in opposition to Truman. 3. Said that he had not talked with Avereil Harriman about Har riman's entering the race for sena tor from New York against Repub lican Senator Ives. He said he did not select candi dates outside Missouri, when asked if he would luce to see Harriman make the race. Under questioning, Truman said he had never considered support ing Harrison for the Democratic presidential nomination. He said Harriman - had asked him if it would be all right for him to ret the support of the New York dele gation. Truman said he agreed to this. Then Truman' repeated that he considers Stevenson the best can didate and described him as one who certainly will win. 4. Refused comment on recent political speeches by the Republi can presidential nominee, Dwight L. Eisennower. HUSKIES HAS FAR MORE RICH RED MEAT THAN THI AVERAGE DOG MOM 0UCa? Terence!
