PAGE TEN IlKRALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS. OREGON WEDNESDAY, .JULY 30. 1052 by Red Hard TWO DYNAMITE left hooks has made a flstlo also-ran and a be liever. The also-ran Is highly-publicised Harry (Kid) Matthews. The believer is me a Matthews (an for many montiis now and one f the blokes that picked the Idaho Hot Potato to win by a' knockout tlondav nlKht. In case you don't know, the Ruy on the business end of the two left hooks was Rocky Marciano, the Brockton Blockbuster. Bv any other name, he gets my unqualified vote now as the world s best heavyweight, the next cham pion. WHAT IS Marciano's main claim to lame as a ringman, besides his lullabv wallops? Here's what I gather from stories I've read on the ex-GI and em phasized by his two-round blackout of Matthews Monday nigut in Yankee stadium. Marciano is the type of fighter that comes along once in a long time a savage workman who swings until something gives. The ringwise call it "killer's instinct." Not a nice phrase perhaps but the fight business isn't a nice business. The most notable owner of this killer Ingredient was Jack De mo sey, who came at foes with a blue black beard and mayhem in mind. A nice guv outside the ring generous with his friends and good to his mother but a snarling sav age when facing a foe across the squared circle. "KILLER'S INSTINCT" .is a boxing phrase you don't hear as much as you used to. For the simple reason that It Isn't seen as often. - Joe Louis, as great as he was, didn't have ft except for one fight when he unhinged Max Schmeling 4n a rematch because the scowling German directed un complimentary pre-fight remarks toward Americans in general and Negroes in particular. Strangely enough, the closest thing I've seen to "killer's instinct" since I was a small lad attending fights with my dad. was last Fri day night at the Armory. Ralph Weiser had it when he hit Jerry Renaud with everything but the ring posts. , Sparring partners were looking tor other employment in Mar ciano's drills for the Matthews Xighu He was mean. leveling as if the chips were down. It's a sure mark of a fighter that is somewhat better than good. It's the reason Marciano will bat aged Joe Walcott out in September. BECAUSE THE Finns are nice people, the Russians have been permitted to pull off the greatest steal in the history of the Olympic Gaines. What shouVi have been an easy win for the United States and an ordinary showing by Uie Russians was turned into a larce ov rec' ognlslng bv the hosting Finland' ers of "gymnastics" as a series of Individual events rather than as simple team competition. The Russians, men and women. scored 187 points to America a 1 point via dumb bells, long horses and such. The main event of every Olym piad since renewal of the Games m 1896 has been the track and field championships, where the Americans won bands down as ex pected. Although team scoring is unof ficial, the Russian newspaper Prav da has come up with this: "The Soviets, as usual, lead all other nations. WHILE MINORITIES were in terested in such entertainment as two - oars - with cox. greco-Roman wrestling, the erjee finals and gymnastics, 70.000 fans filled the stadium each day lor track ana lie d Sportswriter Deke Houlgate asks logicallytHow could anyone even a Russian reason that six women bouncing around In a gvm was more important than an American 1-2-3 in tne snot pui7" A case in point on this query: Six Soviet gals grabbed all six places and the 25 points that went with tnem in tne norse vaun. O'Brien, Hooper and Fuchs col leced It. It's very likely the United States could have scored even more heavily in track and field events but lor the traditional agreement that no nation could enter more than three athletes in a single event. For some strange reason, this universal understanding was waived in gymnastics and up to eight competitors took part in oo ui the men's and women's tests. LET'S AT LEAST be consistent. I second Houlgate's suggestion that no nits scored bv America and other nations in the Winter Olym pics be added retroactively to those scored in Finland. That would boost our total ssw and give winner Norway an extra 125 . The Russians, who had "cased" the Winter Olympics, didn't enter. Instead thev rode to a propo-ganda-tinged victory at Helsinki on gymnastics. over tne years, host nations nave expanded the schedule to a redicu lous point. Germany did it in 1936 ana Tron, a gimmicK just a little less comical than the one Just put over by the Russians. ix tne trend continues, iooe zor hop scoteh. mumbly peg and horse shoes as recognized competition in 1936. Cagers Rally to Whip Brazilians, 57 to 33 HELSINKI (fl The United States Olympic basketball team came from behind in the second half to deleat Brazil, 57 to 53 Wednesday and remain undefeated in Olympic competition. Brazil led 26-24 at half tune It was the sixth straight Olympic victory for the United States, which now enters the final round robin competition. The American players seemed dead on their feet and, despite their height advantage were not getting the ball off the backboards. They also were off on their shoot ing and missed frequently on very easy chances. " Brazil gained control midway in the first half, as Angelo Bonfiettl, a Brazilian fireball, sent his team into the lead with three one-handed field goals from behind the fol line. Bonfiettl and Alfredo Rodrlguas da Motta continued hitting and early in the second hall Brazil led 30 to 26. With Brazil leading 31-30, sev eral Brazilians protested the ref eree's decision on a jump ball. The referee, a Czech, called a techni cal foul. Clyde Lovellette made the gift toss and followed it a few seconds later with a tip-in to put the United States ahead. Brazil drew even again at 34-34, but Mark Frelburger of the Pe oria, HI., Caterpillars, put America ahead again with a left hand hook shot and the U.S. never was beaded. Coach Warren Womble again mixed up his AAU and University ol Kansas players in the lineup. The team did not look as sharp, however, as it did in beating Chile 103-55. Womble rested big Bob Kurland, Dean Kelley and Bob Kenney. All the other American playes saw action.
