Weekly Wage Up In State SALEM im Weekly earnings of Oregon's manufacturing work ers rose in June to an all-time high of S80.80. the Oregon Unemploy ment Compensation Commission said Thursday. i The average hourly wage was $2.04, virtually the same as it has been for several months. The aver age work week jumped from 38.1 hours in May to 39.6 hours in June, accounting for the Increase in weekly wages. Logging and lumber workers got average pay checks ol 193.14 a week in June. Frank Armstrong, commanding officer of the 6th Air Division, wno was nearby, ex- plained to the newspaper carrier mat no one could get into the area. This paper has to be delivered. Wayne insisted. In a move to halt fatal log- truck accidents, an nounced Its action at a meeting called by Gov, Douglas McKay, who is concerned over the in creased number of log truck ac cidents In recent weeks. Attending the meeting were re presentative,') of the Industry, state police, highway department, pub lic utilities commissioner and In dustrial Accident Commission. Paul Gurske, member of the In dustrial Accident Commission, said the commission's 64 safety Inspec tors will have all the trucks In spected within a week or 10 days. Those present at the meeting blamed small Independent opera tors for most of the accidents. Gov. McKay said there have been nine fatalities this year caused by unsafe operation of log trucks. "Most of the truckers who are to blame for this situation are small gyppo operators," he said. The biz operators are doing ev erything they can to clean up this situation. Rep. Loran Stewart, Cottage Grove lumber operator, charged that the public utilities com missioner, slate police and Indus trial Accident Commission pass the buck among each other too much. State Police Supt. H. O. Malson said he does not have enough men to police the situation, and Gov. McKay agreed, saying 100 addi- Con Escapes In Washington WALLA WALLA UP) John Craynor. warden of the Washington State prison here, revealed Thurs day that a 60-year-old inmate serv ing a life term for criminal insanity had escaped from the prison dairy farm Wednesday night. Craynor. who said Washington and Oregon authorities had been alerted, identified the escapee as Emll Lake, who was wearing blue prison denims when last seen.
