And Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt,
67. a little moisture In her eves,
too. bearing the other partv a mes
aage from her late husband he
who led the Democrats to victory
over Hoover and three successive
other Republicans In the most turb
ulent years of our century.
It was Eleanor Roosevelt's turn
Tuesday nlitht.
It seemed natural to call her
Eleanor," thoush she was the
w idow of a President of the United
States.
That's what the columnists and

BOSTON u Forty-two pris
oners, led by two life-term killers,
released two hostages unharmed
and surrendered early Wednesday
about 15 hours after noting at
Massachusetts State prison in
Charlestown and barricading them
selves in the auto plate shop.
Correction Commissioner Max
well B. Grossman said no prom
ises were given to the prisoners
and added, "they'll get the max
imum (penalty)."
The two hostages, Cornelius
Horgan, 41, and John Kerriran. 45.
prison employes, said they were
swept Into the three-story building
to the top floor where the prisoners
set up a barricade.
They said they were not harm
ed, bound or gagged by the pris
oners. The hostages added that although
they were allowed to move around
rather freely In the room they
spent a weary night and always
felt in danger. The temperature in
the barricaded snop was iw De
grees, they said.
The riot broke out about 1 p.m.
EST, Tuesday and ended about
4:15 a.m. EST, Wednesday.
Horgan and Kerrivan said the
prisoners gave them sanawicnes,
candy and cigarettes which they
had taken from the prison canteen.
The prisoners, tney said, nad
canned goods which they used for
themselves.
Grossman gave special credit to

to Warden John J. O'Brien and

can see are upstanding Americans,

And the Democrats laughed. But
not verv heartily.
For this woman In the plain blue
street dress, with the two big
diamond rings casting sparks of
reflection from the merciless spot-

them.
A svmbol of victory after vic
tory in a vear when the Republi
cans have some ideas about win
ning tlie presidency themselves for
a change.
Besides. Mrs. Roosevelt brought
a serious message as did Herbert
Hoover to the Republicans two
weeks ago.
They got the same sort of recep
tion. Spontaneous. Affectionate.
Frenzied.
And the messages they brought.
this patriarch and this matriarch
of the political tribes, were lust
about as fax apart as they could
be.
Hoover's advice has been re
ported before: Don't go overboard
on aid to other countries. Con
centrate on a big air forcel cap
able of striking bark like a rau
Ueanak if the United States Is
attacked. Don't bankrupt the coun
trv wtUi big spenduig and ruinous
taxes.
Mrs. Roosevelt might have Writ
ten her speech as a poml-bjr-polnt
answer:
"There Is a . . . nilnoritv In
this coutitrv which advocates
changing our national svmbol
which is the eagle to that of the
ostrich and withdrawing from the
United Nations."
"Our men are Hunting In Korea
so that they will not have to light
in their own main streets."
"The cost of supporting the U.N.
and its specialized agencies for
each man, woman and child in the
U.S. is 77 cents a year. The price
of World War II was S1.71H for
every person then alive."
Mrs. Roosevelt saved her heav
iest ammunition until last.
She told the delegates she was
going to read them the last mes
sage F.D.R. ever sent his country
men. It was prepared for the Jeffer
son Dav dinner in Washington
April 13. 1945.
Roosevelt never delivered it. He
died just 34 hours before. So his
wife read the message Tuesday
night:
"Let me assure you that mv
hand is the steadier for the work
that is to be done, that I move
more firmly Into the task, know
ing that vou millions and mil
lions of you are Joined with me
in the resolve to make this work
endure.
"The work, by friends. Is neace,
more than an end of this war
mi end to Die beginning of all wars,
yes, an end. Inrevor, to this un
practical, unrealistic settlement of
the differences between govern
ments bv the mass killings of peo
ples. "Today as wa mova against the
ten'ble scourge of war a we go
forwari toward the greatest con
tribution that anv generation of
human beings can make In this
world the contribution of In-line
peace, 1 ask you to keep your
faith.
"1 measure the sound, solid
achievement that can lie made at
this time bv the straight edge of
your confidence and your resolve.
And to vou. and to all American;
who dedicate themselves with us
to the making of an abiding peace.
I sav: .
"The only limit to our realisa
tion of tomorrow will be our doubts
of todav. Let us move forward
with strong and active tnith."
