Yet the same homes can be so poorly llghtd thai they're a generation behind what they could be. It's enough to make you rub your eyes to read that it would Use 100 years to bring the aver age home up to date In lighting at the rate we have been glowing One expert contends that lighting in the bulk of homes to as obsolete as the old-fashioned Ice box or wash tub. According to the power indus try, the use of electricity In home has Increased almost seven times since 1914, but over the same per iod the use of electricity In light ing our houses has Increased less than three times. The rest has been going for the gadgets. Since electrical appliances in general became part of household eoulpment. their share of the elec tricity used in homes has Jumped about 1.000 times. This means something when you consider the fact that more than 00 per cent ot all houses (both farm and city) now have electric lights, while only seven of the 31 modern appliances are in use In more than 60 per cent of our homes. There seems to be plenty of room for Improvement In lighting. And It doesn't have to be costly. Furthermore, you can get a lot more light for your money out of electrlo wires than you can get heat or motor power for appliances. Apparently most of us simply don't use enough bulbs or strong enough bulbs. For example, the ex perts say that a Door lamp for reading ought to have a three-stage 100-300-300 watt bulb, plus a 33-watt circular flourescenl tube. For a table lamp used for reading, the prescription Is the same floures cent tube with at least a ISO-watt bulb. Even a desk lamp Is supposed to have a o0-100-160-watt three-light bulb, or a 160-watt frosted bulb. Two kinds of light are considered necessary for every room a spe cial light on your work and gen eral lighting to eliminate . eye straining contrasts. For general room lighting there has been a noticeable trend toward lighted valances an outer wall over windows, on inner walls over pictures, or both. These fixtures highlight draperies and other decor ation, provide Indirect light reflect ed from walls and ceilings, and create illusions of space In small rooms. You can buy lighting valances ready to put up and plug In. or you can make them very easily. They conceal fluorescent tubes, the r i I B.R.
