As he care fully works his garden weeding his strawberries and pulverizing the caked soli Into a fine, silken texture, nis bird class line up about him atop the fc:e posts ail around and watch htm cozlly , ' Some are cocking their heads pertly while others less scholarly are preening their feathers or oth erwise Inking attentivencss. Occasionally somo chirp s note of appreciation and for the most part none are Bfrnld but are keenly watchful scrutinizing Jack's every maneuver as he goes through his professorial routine of laboratory demonstrations up one row and down another. When Jack leaves his garden to go to work In the mornings the birds all snap adroitly to atten tionfor If the truth were actually known, this Is the one moment lor which they all have been waiting They watch him surreptitiously un til he Is out of sight, then, one by one they flit down to inspect his ganrlen prowess. Strutting In full swinging cadence over the freshly upturned earth, here and mere uicy sharp-shoot a struggling worm Intely upheaved and exposed as easy prey. When their appetites have been satisfied on fresh meats, htey turn to the desserts. There they are nice red strawberries hanging lusciously from the beautiful big vines. Borne will take their des serts first others mix them along with the main course but all, you bet, get their fill then heave that unanimous sigh, "what a blrdly paradise we've hcrel" This days class tells others and the news has now traveled through all the realm of Blrdland until Jack's "Paradise for Birds" has become the chief topic of conver sation amongst all the birds. Now you will see two birds atop each post nil the ,way 'round as Jack works serenely on, never once does he molest them. But he calls them his "fine feathered robbors." for he has no allusions and no ber ries. He knows he la Just throwing his time to the birds but somehow something stays his anger and he refuses to harm them and each day he Just keeps working away.
