LIVELY MARKET au this stems from an increas ing uneasiness oVer rumors on the West Coast as well as the rest ol the nation that a lively .market exists tor high school ath letes, and that the athletes are cashing In on it. Everest added - Conference Commissioner Victor Schmidt reported that he did not have the staff necessary to run down the rumors. So athletic di rectors and faculty representatives from the nine conference schools voted Tuesday to increase his staff. Mo limit was placed on the number he may hire. The officials also took tentative action on basketball and football systems. Basketball coaches voted lor a conference-wide schedule to replace the present Northern and Southern Divisions. This would call for each team to play all others Final action was set back at least until December., for athletic directors said they would have to study the plan. The committee will report In December. GRID FORMULA The officials voted tentatively to change the football schedule form ula. The proposal is for all schools to play at least six conference earnes. with California schools re quired to play at least one of them In the Paclfio Northwest. At pres ent they are not required to do this. Whenever California schools play Washington at Seattle, they also will be asked to play another team In the Northwest. Idaho games will not eount in the minimum of six per- Mason, nor - will California schools be required to play Idaho at Moscow. Everest said the committee that drew up this plan had representa tives from three California schools, and all approved the plan. Athletic directors will draw up tentative schedules for 1958 and 1957. the first open years. Congdon Gets 'Open Crown CLARKSTON. Wash. IB Tacoma pro Charley Congdon put together two subpar rounds in the final 36 holes of the Washington State Open Golf Tournament Tuesday and pocketed first money with a 72 hole total of 371. The Tacoma veteran fired a 65 on the par-71 Clarkston Golf and Country Club, best score of the tourney, on his first round Tues day and closed with a 70. His 72-hole total. 13 under par for the course, netted Congdon $500 first prize money. WARD SECOND Bud Ward, Great Falls. Mont., professional, was second with a 277 worth $300. Eddie Draper of Seattle posted a 278 for third place honors. Draper was low among the amateurs. NCAA Accepts Portland U PORTLAND m The Univer sity of Portland was notified Tues day it has been elected a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Athletic Director Ed Fiene said Portland will be part of District 8 which Includes California, Oregon. Washington, Idaho. Nevada and Hawaii. W 1 ' sK Hank Saner Hamner Gets Ballot Edge CHICAGO Granny Hamner of the Philadelphia Phillies has taken a lead on Al Dark of the New York Giants for the starting National League shortstop assign ment in latest tabulations of the Ail-Star baseball poll. Hamner had registered 10.163 votes from the nation's fans Wednesday while Dark, the 1951 starting choice, had polled 9,952. Manx sauer, the Chicago Cubs left fielder who tops all major batting marks, continued as the poll's most popular vote - getter with a total of 13.422. Stan Musial of the St. Louis Cardinals was se cond with 12,943. The balloting for starting lineups in the Ail-Star classic at Philadel phia July 8 began last Friday and ww end at midnight June 27. Old Satchemo Paige. Long and lean Leroy came to the rescue ot starter Ned Garver in the sixth inning after the Red Sox had clubbed Uie Brownie ace for two runs which left them trailing, 5-4. Paige found two men on base with only one out but got the side out without further scoring. The loss dropped the Red Sox into third place behind the Cleve land Indians who edged Washing ton, 4-3. The Chicago White Sox moved past the Senators into fourth place with a 15-4 slugfest triumph over the Philadelphia Athletics. CUBS CLIMB The surprising Chicago Cubs picked up a full game on the Na tional League leaders, thrashing while the front-running Brooklyn Dodgers and second-place New York Giants were losing. Sopho more Joe Presko pitched the St. bouis cardinals to a lo-inmng l-o triumph over the Dodgers' Chris Van Cuyk and the Cincinnati Reds outlasted the Giants, 6-5, in 14 in nings. Pittsburgh's cellar-dwellers climbed within 25 games of the top with a 7-5 win over the Boston Braves In preserving Garver's third vic tory, Paige extended his scoreless skein to 24 1-3 innings. He has won five straight and sports a 5-1 record, all in renei. The victory marked the debut as manager of Marty Marion, who succeeded Rogers Hornsby at the helm only a few hours before the game. Ore., High school by the Boston Red Sox this week, will report to Albany. N. Y. of the eastern League, a Red Sox scout reported Tuesday. Charles Wallgren said Urness. 18 - year - old strikeout artist, technically was signed bv Louis ville of the American Association and assigned to Albany. The Red Sox reportedly paid an $86,000 bonus to sign Urness. Randy Turpin Cops Crown LONDON IM Belting Randy Turplft, who now owns four boxing titles in two weight divisions, rested on his laurels Wednesday waiting to see who will fight him for a world championship. Turpin crashed into the light heavyweight ranks Tuesday night with a brilliantly executed 11 -round knockout of Don Cockell. The well-earned victory gave him Cockpit's British national and Brit ish Empire 175-pound crowns to go with the English and European middleweight titles he already owns. Turpin at 162 tj. was outweighed almost 12 pounds, but was never in trouble against the hard-hitting Cockell. He floored his man for eight In the third round and for counts of six and nine in the eleventh before referee Tommy Little decided it was enough for the dazed Cockell.
