Service Pay
Boost Signed

Truman has signed the bill boost
ing pay end allowances In the mili
tary services by nearly half a bil
lion dollars a year.
The White House announced the
slimlnu Tuesday. It came In time
Truman had until the end ol
tills month for the raises to be
come effective with this month's
pay vouchers. '
Intended to help offset higher
living costs, they range from S3
monthly for privates and seamen
to tea for two-star generals and ad
mirals. They apply to approximately S 14
million active as well as retired
personnel.
In the final version of the legis
lation, there was no provision, suoh
as the Senate once voted, to give
an extra $45 monthly to men who
are fighting in or have fought in
Korea.
This may be taken up later under
separate measure.
The pay raise bill calls for a flat
boost of 4 per cent In base pay
of all personnel and an Increase
of 14 per cent In allowances for
food and rental.
It would give the average low
ranking enlisted man a (3 month
ly raise, or 4 per cent of the pres
ent $75 pay. Most of these men
have no dependents and their food
and lodging are furnished by the
government, so the majority are
not affected by the Increase in
allowances.
For enlisted personnel with de
pendents, the monthly Increase in
pay and allowances would range
from $13 to $19.
Final Festival
Princess Named
PORTLAND Ul The last of the
eight princesses have been chosen
and 43 floats have been entered
for next month's Portland Rase
Festival.
Festival officials said they- ex
pected late entries to boost the
number of floats to SO by Friday
night's deadline. .
The floats will parade Friday.
June 13. In the line of march will
be at least 14 bands, nine of them
from Portland and these already
entered from outside the city:
Roseburg. Milwaukie, Vancouver,
Wash., Grants Pass and HOlsboro.

Dutch cabinet Tuesday he came
to Europe out of a sense of duly

Elsenhower said he would like
to make a correction in the Prem

"I aspire to no public office In

accept one out of a sense of duty,'
he declared.
"That sense of duty must be
communicated to me by the great
political party to which I have
given such allegiance as a soldier

workers.
Reliance already has sold three
ot the motors, two for punch press
es and one for a high-speed rod

Man Asks Time
On Charge
A Central Point man. John
Howard Wilcher. 33. asked for
time In District Court Monday to
consult an attorney on charge of
non-support of three minor chil
dren. Wilcher was arrested here by
sheriff's officers and is held in the
County Jail under J1OO0 bail. The
complaint was brought by his wife.
