Once a week a young' Morman soldier leaves his pots and pans at Camp Desert Rock, Nev. to con duct religious services almost within sight of a spot famous in Mormon history. He is Pfc. James Babcock 26, son of George M. Babcock, Mt. Shasta. His Job in the Army is that of a cook for the 652nd trans portation company, stationed at the newest Army post where atom ic tests are underway. Pfc. Babcock is an ordained priest of his church, and holds Mormon services at the request of the Protestant Chaplain at Desert Rock. A Mormon priest or elder when no other services are avail able to Mormon military person nel. Back in 1885 Brigham Young, Mormon leader, sent a grouo ol young men to the present site of as Vegas, Nev., to build a fort and convert the Indians, as Ve gas Is the nearest town -to Camp Desert Rock, 60 miles away.
