Prnmnt action bv the use -of the germWUing drugs or by early drelnagei by makmg a little in cision into the ear drum may pre vent ' great .deal of difficulty later on. ' Th snnrce'of the trouble is in the portion of the ear called the middle ear. which is a sort of closed cavitv shut oft from the ex ternal ear or canal by an ear drum or membrane. This cavity is con nected to the nose by a passage way called the eustachian tuoe. 11 is by way of this tube that many germs originating in the nose pass up to the middle ear. A chronic running ear is a com mon complaint among grownups as well as children. The material which is discharged from a run ning ear consists of germs, dead cells and pus. Usually it is whitish or yellowish in color but the color and consistency vary with the germs which are responsible for the infection. When dangerous germs get into the middle ear they cause inflam mation of the delicate mucous membrane lining. Blockage of tne eustachian tube is common. When doctors look at a person If the orocess goes on and the drum membrane is not cut the pressure generally bursts it and the material escapes by itself. Once a chronic condition has be often difficult. Cleanliness is im portant and includes the removal of crusts and anything which in terferes with drainage. Washing with various solutions is of great help in accomplishing this purpose. Some doctors have used sulfa drugs in powder from to blow Into the middle ear. Also, suction is helpful in cleaning out the pus and mucous. Surgery may be considered if other methods fail. Because a chronic condition is ; so troublesome and interferes so property. TULELAKE Official action bv Cyclist Shaken In Collision Hirold E. Stassen's story U one of the saddest case histories on the recent American political scene. It Is a supreme example of what can happen to a man when he is bitten by presidential ambitions. At 31, Stassen was an aggressive governor of Minnesota with a bright luture. In his mid-forties he is a forlorn figure with no political prospects at all. And that because he allowed his higher yearnings to consume him. In the light of his record at Minnesota, his service In the Navy, and his performance as a delegate at the United Nations charter con ference in San Francisco, Stassen deserved a chance at the presi dency. Friends built him up for that opportunity by proposing him in 1944 while he was still in the Pacific. Nobody took his candi dacy too seriously that time nor was It intended they should. REAL BID Four years later Stassen made bis real bid. He had begun by avowing his candidacy two years before nominating time. He pounded back and forth across the country in vigorous pursuit of con vention support. His early fortune was not bad. He won primaries in Wisconsin and Nebraska, then captured Pen nsylvania on a write-in. There after, however, he seemed to over reach himself. He claimed 14 or IS delegates In contest against Sena tor Taft in his native Ohio but won only nine. Next came his Oregon debacle Governor Dewey of New York lacerated Stassen in a radio de bate over a bill designed to control communists In America. Dewey's Oregon stumping outpaced Stas sen's. Dewey won that primary and the 1948 boom lor Stassen ended forthwith. , Ohio was actually the start of his downfall but it was that un successful radio debate in Oregon ?cll.uhurt..mm ia Pul"lo y ror there it was revealed that Btassen did not really understand J5ct he wa discussing.
