Klamath Falls is all alone atop
the California-Oregon. Rifle League
ladder after the twelfth round of
fehooting and can cinch a trip to
the state tournament with a win
over Roseburg.
Roseburg is the club that gets
an assist for putting the Klamath
riflers in the lead by out-shooting
the defending champion Medford
club in the twelfth round.
Klamath Falls at the same time
was downing Langell Valley to
pive the local club a 10-1 record.
Medford slid into a second-place tie
with Yreka, both with 9-2 marks.

of title play In the fast-paced open

topped all previous scoring re

set the fastest pace, downing Cul

61-58, Mapleton defeated Wallowa,
67-54, and Rogue River downed
Powers, 43-43. Only the Rogue River-Powers
game failed to top the
previous . tourney record of 111
points in a game.
Knappa's 73 points gave It the
single-gamo - scoring record. The
old mark was 69, established by
Pleasant HIU in 1946. The Knappa
Culver total of 135 also is a re
cord. In title play Rogue River meets
Mapleton and Sublimity plays
Knappa Friday night.
Powers, a team many expected
to see win the title, was knocked
over in the initial same. It was
close all the way. not decided until
35 seconds from tne end, wnen a
Rogue River substitute, Sam Black,
sank a push shot from the corner.

Mapleton. a team that now has won
27 consecutive games, became the
most prominently mentioned entry.
Everyone is impressed with the
team's record.
TIGHT
MaDleton. an inland Lane coun
ty team that somehow has acquired
the nickname of Sailors, had just
too tight - a defense for Wallowa
from Eastern Oregon. It was never
close after the first quarter.
Sublimity and Echo matched
fast breaks, with Sublimity gaining
the edge. With five minutes to go
Sublimity held a 16-Doint margin.
Echo tried valiently then, but could
cut only 13 points off that margin
before time, ran out.

" For the second straight week.
the Klamath Gun Club turned in
a perfect 75 score in the Oregon
Journal Telegraphic shoot and the
three marksmen went on to post
perfect 50x50 scores in the club's
regular 16-yara snoot on its wocus
range Sunday.
E.-E. Driscoll. C. J. Martin and
J. M. Adams posted perfect ze s
for the Journal shoot, then shot an
other perfect round for the regular
competition.

The Gun-Club has scheduled a
three-in-one shoot for Sunday, 10:30
a. m. In addition to the Journal

KGC will hold Its first registered
shoot at Wocus March 30. Trap
shooters from Southern Oregon and

dition of four eastern schools but
one official said the selection sys
tem should be changed.
The NCAA Thursday night an
nounced the choice of Fenn State,
Dayton, Duquesne and St. John's as
"at-large" representatives, mean
ing they do not represent any par
ticular conference.
The four newcomers, plus Santa
Clara and Oklahoma City also

Howard Hobson. Yale University
basketball coach who served on the
Selection Committee which picked ;
the four eastern schools, said at
New Haven he did not agree with
the choices.
He said the NCAA's original plan
of conducting basketball playoffs
on a regional basis should be re
stored and that he would' recom
mend this to the NCAA.
The 10 conference tltleholdcrs In
clude Kentucky, the defending
champion and top-ranked team in
the country In the Associated Press
poll this season, and Illinois, the
nation's No. 2 team in the AP poll.
Four regional tournaments, with
four teams each, will be held Mar.
21-22. The winners of these meets
qualify for the champlbnshlp finals
at the University of Washington,
Seattle, Mar. 25-26.
The regional meets will be held
at Raleigh. N. C. Chicago, Kansas
City and Corvallis, Ore.
