It also linked bun wruj a recent trip to Oermany by four leading American atomic scientists Dr. Traffic Fatality Picture In Future Not By DAVE VNDERHILL Now that the nation's millionth trafflo victim has been laid be neath the sod, a good start has been established on recording num ber two million. Nationwide, over 800 persons were killed during the long Christ mas holiday and starting today a similar number can be expected to gain admission to the two mil lion club during the New Year's vacation: r " For some reason or other, de spite the heavy winter weather and holiday traffic, Klamath county did not make the fatality-table last week. This, despite the fact over 1 14 cars were pulled out oi ditches, and snowbanks, put there by icy and snowcovered highways. But the same luck cant be ex pected this weekend, especially when the tendency to overindulge is stronger. . Already this year Klamath Coun ty has 22 traffic deaths to its fame, 20 of these happening outside the limits of Klamath Falls. That doesn't seem like a very great number, considering the num ber of cars traveling along the county and state highways in a year's time. ; But look at this comparison of figures; The city of Portland In the 1950 census had 371,011 - persons tabulated.- - .. . Klamath county In the same cen sus was chalked down as having 42.014 residents. Roughly, that's a ratio of 8 to 1. Now look at this set of figures. As of a few days ago. Portland, with all its heavy traffic, had to taled up 47 traffic deaths for 1951. But Klamath county with only one-ninth of Portland's population had slightly less than half the num ber of Portland's traffic deaths 22 to be exact. - Tfcis figure of 22. Incidentally, is a postwar record for this county. The state of Oregon hasn't been doing very well in its efforts to cut down traffic accidents this year either. Oregon traffic accidents have claimed an average of more than one life a day in 1951 to date. According to a news release of the Oregon State Traffic Safety Divi sion on December 21, Oregon road lieaths were at 420. just 7 short of the 427 killed in 1950. .-. With Oregon's holiday traffic VC, ' . - ...... those expected this weekend, last year's mark will certainly be ex ceed by a sizeable amount. The greater amount of ; traffic deaths in the state occur in rural areas. Last year 390 were recorded in rural areas. ' Furthermore, 195 fatal accidents ocurred on paved highways painted with a center stripe. Other figures released by the traffic safety division indicate that drivers Involved in 170 fatal acci dents had at least six or more years of driving experience. We could go on and on quoting figures from the safety division, to try and determine the cause for au these accidents in rural areas; bad roads, mechanical or driver defect or obstructed view, or some such excuse. That way your name won't be added to the roster of the Two Million Club this year, and the lim ited advantages of joining the club getting your name in the paper and a hole in the ground won't be yours to worry about. Private Dams Said Threat BOISE Wi Private power dams such as the C. J. Strike Project on Snake River are a "serious threat" to Idaho's Irrigation development, the president of the Oregon-Idaho Hells Canyon Association said Thursday night. Albert Ullman of Baker, Ore., charged that the authorization for Idaho Power Company's Strike Dam contained no guarantee of up steam water rights for irrigation development, adding that "any fu ture Irrigation district will have to go on bended knee and beg Idaho Power Company for water rights." Be said Hells Canyon authoriza tion legislation pending in Congress contains "an Iron clad provision for protection of upstream con sumptive use." Ullman then asked "What kind of power development Is going to hurt irrigation develop ment in Idaho?" Ullman, here for the formation of a Boise Chapter of the organiza tion which is , backing the Hells Canyon Project, said . Idaho and Eastern' Oregon can become the "industrial area of the atomic age" with cheap power from Hells Can yon. Governor Pays Back Taxes LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Wl Gov. Sid McMath has announced pay ment of (9170 in back federal in come taxes and Interest. The governor said Friday he had made full payment of a claim re sulting from an investigation of his iinancial affairs lor the past id years by the Bureau of Internal Revenue. McMath said two major items were in dispute in the investiga tion "traveling expenses which I deducted because these expenses were incurred in conjunction with my duties' as governor, and a loss I took on sale of my former home in Hot Springs.' The governor, a close personal and political friend of President Truman, said he had paid $833322 In back taxes, and $836.78 in inter est.
