" " Court Will Hear Appeals On Schools-Bible Issues WASHINGTON, W The Supreme, Court trill decide in the new yearj two controversial issues involving schools and religion. The nine Justices- agreed to rule whether public schools violate the constitution by releasing students lor religious instruction during reg ular! school hours. . Previously, the court agreed to decide whether daily Bible reading in public schools is permissible under the constitution. These school practices were pro tested in appeals to tne nignesi tribunal filed bv several parents. They insisted, that such acts by public schools tend to break down the separation of church and state required bv the constitution's first amendment. The Supreme Court ordered both cases argued at the same time. The argument session probably will be scheduled for February. Final decision likely will come in the spring. Appeal papers said mil lions of school children will be affected. . The appeal dealinjr with "re leased time" religious instruction was filed by two New York City mothers. The program as operated in that) city permits release of children from classes one hour a week, for religious instruction else where. The students receive the kind of religious instruction speci fied by their parents. Children whose parents do not request such religious study remain in public coooi jor regular classes. The appeal questioning dally Bible reading was filed by two New Jersey parent. They opposed a New Jersey law which requires the reading of at least five verses from the Old Testament each school day. It also permits, but does not require, the recitation of the Lord's . prayer. Programs similar to these are used in many states throughout the country. - ' Q O O u.
