Hen Pheasant Survival Low Wildlife research experts at Ore gon state college have come up with now evidence In support ol the closed hunting season on nhean ii nt. hens, according to Arthur 8. Klnursen, leader ol the Oregon co operative wlldllle research unit. Extensive studies bv the research unit have proved that pheasant hen have a much lower survival rule than cocks. Only about 40 per cent ol the hens survived In OBC experiments, while cocks had a survival rata of about 10 percent. Because cock have the greater ability to survive natural hazards encountered by game birds. Ihey can be shot during long open sea sons If the hens are adequately protected, Elnarsen said. Age anDarently has an eflect on pheasant survival, according to preliminary trials at OSC. Eight different groups of pheasant Juven ile were released this year. Sur vival and growth were excellent in the older age classes through out a five-month atudv period, but about 75 percent ol the group re leased at six weeks of age were lost. ; Test have shown that It la far more desirable to release game farm hens In March or April alter the hunting season Is past, since their value lies in producing a good brood of young pheasants, ex- olalned Klnarscn. The number of eggs produced by a pheasant hen in a normal nesting season Is about 11 under good conditions. The survival rate of the young, according to exoerl ments, Is only about four chick. Other phases of OSC pheasant studies have Included habitat and nutritional Investigations. Tests have .shown that pheasants can be established In many area now overlooked as pheasant ground. Nu trition tests Indicate that pheasants depend to a large extent on green vegeumie matter for lood and need Pioneer Olflte Supply has all makes . . . portable typewriters . . . try them today.
