KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON WEDNESDAY, NOVKMHKK 21, l!tH New City Jail About To Be Opened For Business; New Color Motif Prevails By HALE 6CARBROUGH The squat concrete and steel building back of the city hall, Klamath Falls new Jail. Is about ready lor occupancy. Sometime In the next couple of weeks, probably, the police depart ment will move Into the new build ing, taking along all lis equipment and whatever prisoners happen to be In the old hoosegow at the mo ment. The new building, which has been about nine months building, will house the department In more elegance and space than the police have known In Klamath Falls here tofore, and will accommodate about 50 or 60 prisoners In con siderably more style than to which thev might have grown accustomed In the ancient city hall basement lockup. The present Jail, In use since 1914, many times has been con demned by grand juries and gen erally hasn't been considered a fit keeping place for prisoners. But It has been steadily .In use over the years. Before the last war the city and county entered on a plan for a Joint county-city Jail and Justice building, and saved money toward . that end up until last winter. Part of the city's money was raised by taxation for Jail purposes and rnnlrin't be merit any other way But the joint Jail plan fell through and the city put Its money into a jail of Its own. located on the lot back of the city hall. Enter lng the front door a customer comes first to a business window where such activities as collecting parking meter ticket money and filling out accident reports is car ried on. Down a corridor to the left are private rooms for the po lice chief, detectives, sergeants and a, squadroom. Other customers, who probably won't be coming into the building unaccomoanled. will enter by side door and be confronted Im mediately by the booking desk. Right across the hall are drunk tanks where prisoners are to be put to sober up before being trans ferred to the main bullpen or cells upstairs. The second floor contains the bullpen and half a doien smaller cells. Including women's quarters. The decor of the building is something more than remarkable, and it's a question whether it'll be appreciated. Walls inside the side door are painted a sort of pastel orange: the drunk tanks are aluminum: up stairs corridor walls are light green; bullpen walls are buff; cell walls are green. The cell furniture bunks and picnic type bench-tables is made of steel. The color scheme imparts a rather airy effect. Psychology Prof Up For Extortion LOS ANGELES.
