NEW PINE CREEK
Br IRVIN FARIS
; The fire commissioners are stlU
hinging tough for a fire engine
that will reduce the insurance rate
in the New Pine Creek rural lire
protection district at "least by 10
percent. It all goes well the district
should have delivered in the next
two weeks a 1847 Ford fire truck
lully equipped as required by the
Oregon fire insurance rating bu
reau, with an adequate amount of
hose and accessories.
As demonstrated near Halsey.
the truck pumps over 500 gallons
per minute with over 250 pounds
pressure. '
But we have to have 500 gallons
per minute at this altitude, also
when the truck is tested here at
the time ol delivery. The Nelson
Equipment company, which made
the test for the Bhedd-Halsey dis
trict, and from whom the truck
is to be purchased, is confident
that the fire truck with its Sea
graves pump will make the Class
'B" test.
Commissioners making the ten
tative purchase of the rig were
Jim Snider, president of the board;
Irvln Faris, secretary - treasurer.
Kelton Butler, fire chief, and Neal
Elliott, the fourth member to make
a quorum vote in favor of the
transaction.
O. K. Johnston finally got his

Mrs. Sylvester Gallagher last Fri

week from a few weeks visit down

she reported but was glad to get

Mrs. Opal McGrew, and daugh

Prineville, Oregon, visited with rel
atlves here over the weekend. The
visit was primed by the Frlneville
Lalcevlew football game which they
attended.
Mr. and Mrs. E. S. Engstrom,
and daughter, Shirley, and Mr. and
Mrs. Claypool and family of Prine

The regular meeting of the East

NEW YORK, ir-"We have never
owed," said Mrs. Elisabeth Anton
ovsky. 77.
So for three years she scrimped
and saved until she had $100.
Then, dressed sedately In black
because her husband was dead and
walking slowly because she was
tired, she took it to the department
ol hospitals.
She wanted, she said, "Just to
pay for the hospital where every
body was so good and kind to my
husband."
FLIGHT . : '
She and her husband, Alexis, fled
from Russia and the bolsheviks and
came to this country In 1023. Lan
guage difficulties prevented him
from continuing his career as a
lawyer, but he found opportunities
as a musician. '.
Illness plagued him, though, and
he died In Metropolitan hospital in
1948 after a nine-day hospitaliza
tion. The- hospital, she told cashiers
Thursday, apparently forgot to send
a bill.
They ushered the white-haired
woman into the office of Hospitals
Commissioner Marcus D. Kogel. He
explained that state funds for tuber
cular patients were applied to de-
tray costs.
There was no Mil, he said.
Mrs. Antonovsky said she would
have none of that. . .
"All the people were so nlee and
are so nice and my husband was
treated so well, she said, "that
as a Russian woman I must give
you this, because I am not happy
about the feelings between Ameri
cans and Russians.
TROUBLE" '
She said she saved it In small
bills from a small pension and a
little money her husband leiu ane
changed it at a bank Into a single
S100 bill "so the good people here
would not have "trouble to count."
Kogel agreed to accept the money
for the Metropolitan hospital's so
cial service auxiliary which per
forms services for needy patients.

her and he had severe cuts on the
