Murchlson Mondav fined a Portland grocer 130 for selling cigarets to a 13-year-old boy. The boy admitted he had forged his mother's signature on a note requesting the cigarets. State law permits grocers to sell cigarets to minors If they have a note from their parents, but a city ordinance prohibits the practice. Judge Mur chlson said. The boy's mother, Mrs. Marian Smith, said she had Instructed her son to write the letter and forge her signature. She then followed the boy to the store of Aaron Thorn burg, witnessed the sale, and then reported the matter lo police. The boy said he had forged his mother's signature on previous oc casions to get cigarets. The Judge said he had to fine the grocer, but reprimanded the mother for the method she used to trap the grocer. PORTLAND. It had a atrady stream of aecondary attractions wllh such Players as Frank Craven, Edmund Rrcese, E. E. Cllve and Tom Moore, Among the plays In the first few years: "II I Was Rich "Hie Home Townera," "Meet Die Wife." "Dear Me," "Ball Water," "It Pays to Advertise," "M'Lord the Duke." During the depression, the Play house was subjected to long pe riods of darkness. It looked aa though the stage was dying, but somehow it managed to come back aa It always does. Helping this was the federal theater project, which occupied the house with shows designed to keep actors working. I encountered the theater about this time. I can recall a show called "Two-a-Day." a half-amusing, half-plilful parade of oldtlme vaudeville stars. All had seen bel ter days. Afler the federal project, a dif ferent kind of show took over the theater Mlnsky'a burlesque. Yes, I caught that show, too, and what an education! Hit or miss attractions followed. About the only big hit was "Oas light," which went on to New York as "Angel Street" and then became the Ingrld Bergman movie. In 1M1, 8ld Qrauman. C. E. To berman and others bought the Playhouse for 1100,000. They named it the El Capitan, after another Hollywood legit house which had been made Into a movie theater. The next year brought forth the theater's greatest auccess. Ken Murray onened a vaudeville review called "Blackouls of 1M3." a wartime show full of corn and Marie Wilson. Critics predicted a run of only a few weeks. So did this critic, who saw It from the last row In the balcony. The show ran seven years. Dur ing that time the theater's owners declared dividends of M30.000. Blackouts" probably could be run Ing still, except that Murray want ed to hit New York with It. The result was the other way around "Blackouts" died on Broadway and Murray stayed on to be a TV star. After the "Blackouts" tenancy. the El Can had a few flops. TV networks became Interested In the place since It had been ued suc cessfully for Ourante and Hope ra. dlo shows. (Oddly enough, the thea ter never Played mov's In lla his tory). And so the El Can was sold for t3M.Ono to the Catholic archdiocese of Los Angeles, which now rents 1 t NBC. And that Is the history of the El Capitan.
