It was recalled that the lirsl Eoroptimist club wa:; founded at Oakland, Calif., Septem ber 21, 1921 by Helena Gamble and a group of business women. Tiie chio was dedicuted to service and to the betterment of their com munity. The name chosen was "aoropllmist" coined from two Latin words, "soror" meaning sis ter, and "optima" meaning "the be:t and hl-;iiest good." 'i'l-anshted freely the name means "ihe best ."or women." objective of all Sorop tmiist clubs. In organizing, the women followed the pattern of ex isting: men's clubs. Membership was by invitation, nnd was limited to established, active executive women in specified classification, with only one member from a clas sification m each club. The pearl jubilee was marked by a contribution of pennies, one from every member for each of th 30 years for fellowships. It was announced that Ruth Adams is the new chairman of the blood bank, and that Maude Goeller is Defense Bond chairman. Miss Bertha Kohlhagen, Salem, and supervisor of home econom ics education in the state, was a guest at luncheon and won the award for the day. Ruth Stark announced thai, it woe her last day at club as she soon leaves for her new home at Ogden, Utah.
