Alturas Man Has Interesting Collection of Rare Antiques By JIM SOUTHER In the attic of Mark Belll's house In Alturaa la one of the largest fun collections In this part ot the coun try. In addition to the guns Belli has also collected swords, curios and pottery dating back to the 15th cen tury. The original gun collection was started by one Nathan Rogers, a Merced. Calif, man when he was presented with a gun said to belong to Joaquin Murrietta, the California desperado of early days. Rogers' eon. Charles, Inherited the collection and ft was he who passed It on to Belli in 1933. Hand Cannes The oldest gun In the Belli collec tion Is a 15th century hand cannon, made in 1448. This consists of a metal tuba shaped like an old fash ioned cannon, only on a small scale, with two prongs projecting from tlio sides. The gun was held In the palm of the hand with the index and middle ringers hooked over the two prongs. It was fired by lighting a fuse at the breech of the gun. Belli, taking a modern day look at the gun,-says he doesnl understand how It could have worked because "by the time you got it lit, the fuse burned down and the contraption fired your opponent wolud hare seen what you were doing and would be far- away A flintlock blunderbuss made In 1600 is also included in the collec tion and is listed as one ot the rarer guns. Little Is known of the history of the short barrelled, short stocked firing piece. SUII Shoot Many of the guns in the collection are In shooting order, and one. said to have belonged to Black Bart, the Po-8, Is In perfect working order. , One that Is not used for firing Is a model three-muzzle loading goose gun weighing 27 pounds. This is one ot the young cannons used by the professional game hunters of the late '90s and has long been outlawed. . One of the rarer Items is a Swiss bow-gun brought to this country in 1755. The metal bow of the gun is cranked up to firing position by a leverage gimmick and it will toss a s wooden dart with great force and 'accuracy. Another prize gun in the collection Is a target rifle with a to-inch barrel. According to the In scription on the gun it was made for L. Moller of San Francisco. Arousing Another amusing relic ot earlier days in the weapons field is a 44 caliber gun with three revolving barrels designed to give the shooter a couple of extra shots In the days of single shotguns. On top ot his collection ot guns and weapons Belli has acquired some tine examples ot pottery and baskets. Some of the Swiss steins ir the collection are very beautiful and one has a music box built In that plays a melody when the stein is lifted. Baskets Indian basket weaving at its high est is represented in the collection. there being examples of woven bas kets -that will hold water. Mortars and pestles used in primitive days to roll out meal are included and one ot the pestles is one of the few large ones to be found whole. Most of the large ones have been broken before discovery. As a sideline Belli picks up deer boms found In the woods and pilea them up in his yard.
