All that was visible when excavation work started was a mass el crude brick work the rains sf a giant Zigrnrat or temple tower erected during the third dynasty at ir. boot 100 B.C But careful Investigation revealed that beneath these ruins were the remnants of 14 earlier temples each built on top of the ruins of the one preceding It. Archeiogollsts have eendoded by pottery and other finds that the 14 burled temples represent a period mt ISO jeara -with the earliest ene probably dating from abort 4S4 R. C This detective work into the past of a primitive marsh-dwelling com munity was a difficult Job because the temples to Enki existed before mankind discovered the art of writ ing. The earliest literary reference to Erldu dates back only to 1500 B. c. Even then It was reputed to be the oldest city in the world. In the literature of the Sumerlans whose civilization preceded those of Babylon and Nineveh the creation of Erldu takes precedence over all other places. When Eridn was foandrd the Persian Gulf was believed to have extended as far Inland as Erida. Excavations beneath the 14th and earnest temple have revealed virgin' green sea sand. Beside the earliest temple was found remnants of round oven similar to ovens used today to bake bread In primitive Iraq communities believed to have been used for burnt offerings. High Cost Of Raising Costs WASHINGTON WV-The Chesa peake and Potomac Telephone Co. says It needs more money but not enough to boost pay phone charges to 10 cents. John M. Howard, general commer cial manager, testified at a District of Columbia public utilities commis sion hearing that it would cost 1500. 000 to convert the coin boxes.
