OH BOON THURSDAY, DEC. 8. 1949 Oregon Nut Crop Higher This Year Walnut and filbert nut production In Omm and California In coin parlaon with lut year la larger this year according to a preliminary check by the bureau of agricultural economic. The total production of walnuts In Oregon and Calltomla te now esti mated at 80AM torn which may be compared with 70.100 torn produced In these states In 1944 and the aver age of 94,280 torn. Hlib ritlmata In Oregon the crop la turning out mailer than indicated a month ago. Production la oow estimated at 7500 tone, one-fifth bf low the record large crop of IMS. but still one-fourth bore average. The quality of the crop la much better than last year and the color cf the meat la gen erally good, but the crop la running heavily to small sixes. The filbert crop of Oregon and Washington te now placed at 11.340 tons. While this la lower than ex pected. It la 75 per cent above last year and about double the 10 year average. The quality of this year's crop te. on the whole, good. Confusion Exists on Spud Fees TUI.FTiAKK Since considerable confusion seems te exist as to as sessment fees charged on shipments of potatoes by the Oregon potato commission and the Oregon-California potato committee, operating market order No. 59, W. K. Buse, Tulelake, manager of the O-C P.O. this week made the following state ment: "The above agencies are entirely separate In operation. The Oregon potato commission, with headquarters In Redmond, Ore. charges j01 cente per sack on Ore gon grown potatoes. The Oregon California potato committee, with headquarters In the chamber of commerce, Tulelake, charges M cents on shipments of 900 sacks or less and $1.00 on car lots. There 's no charge on ship ments of one ton or less. He sent word to state and city police and Indian service officials not to bring any more military strag glers or AWOL'a to the county Jail I or seeping. Sheriff Pranry said In the first 11 months of this year, the county jail has boarded seven military pris oners picked up In this area for military authorities, and has not re ceived a penny for their keen. Some have been in Jail two and three weeks while waiting transfer to military police. He said he had received word from army headquarters at The Presidio. San Pranclsco. that the army would pay board bills only for military prisoners placed In civilian jaili by military authority.
