T " The government must decide soon whether tt should permit prices of eorne dairy and poultry products to go down or to bold them at cur rant levels. Tha decision will be made In con nection with producer price support kvels for these products in 1K0. cause of. big supplies and large production, prices are down to or aear levels guaranteed farmers. Tha new farm law going into ef fect January 1 permits the agricul ture department to lower supports an milk, butterfat, eggs, chickens and turkeys. Uncer expiring legis lation, these products had to be supported at 90 per cent parity. Parity is a legal standard for measuring farm prices, designed to be actually fair to producers and those who buy his products. The new law permits the depart ment to support prices of eggs, chickens and turkeys anywhere from xero to W per cent of parity. Milk and butterUt must be support ed at prices between 75 and M par cent of parity. Predictions - Some department officials have predicted that Secretary Brannan will lower supports on ail these Items, but with eggs taking a larger ut In price guarantee than the ether products. The department now faoss the prospect of a loss of .000.000 on surplus eggs bought last year and this year to carry out the price guarantee. Th present support program Is designed to assure producers In the ' Midwest the region of surplus pro ductionan averagi of 35 cents a dosen for genet al run, ungraded eggs. Some market and farm source expect this guarantee to be cut to at least 30 cents for 1950. The government Is supporting the price of milk use! for manufactur ing purposes through the purchase of cheese and dried milk. Such pur chases are designed to support milk prices at a national average of (3.14 for 100 pounds. The depart ment owns about 23.000X100 pounds of cheese and 345 000.000 pounds of dried milk acquired under support operations. Milk Range The new taw will allow the sup port rate for milk to range between $2.90 and S3 tS for 100 pounds. The current support rate for but terfat is about 54 cents a pound. Under the new law it miut be set at somewhere between about 56 and 63 cents. To airy out the butterfat support program, the government has bought 103.000 000 pounds of but ter, of which it still holds about 88 000.000 pounds.
