At the turn of the lart century e find our government taking a progressive step In the field of cun sprvatlon of our nstural resources. This step waa In the acta creating the foreit reserves which In later yrsrr have become know as the Na tional forests. It took the vlMon and decided courage of our presidents Cleveland, MrKlnlry and Theodore Roosevelt to set aside by presiden tial proclamation the large tracts of public lsnd necessary. Up to the alme of the creation of the Korett Reserves the order of the day was 'o liquidate our forest lands aa fast as possible. However, the very wsy the timber lends mere being slashed eventually caused serious thinkers to become alarmed aver the future and Uiey prevailed upon the executive branch of the government to do something; Con gress had done little to heed their warning. In 1176 a modest bit of recognition wsa made by the appro priation of two thousand dollars "to prosecute Invaginations and Inquir ies with the view of ascertaining the annual amount of consumption. Im ports t Ion. and exportation of timber and other forest products, the prob able supply for future wants, the Influence of forests upon climate, and the measures that have been isjccessf ully applied In foreign coun tries, or that inay be deemed appli cable In this country, for the pres ervation and restoration or planting of forests." Dr. Franklin B. Hough waa chosen for this momentous task. Dr. Hough'i report was 630 psget yet Conn rets ordered 23,000 copies to be printed. A second report waa made In 1678 and a third in 1882. These reports gained wide Interest both here and abroad, they assem bled the Information about Ameri can forest rerources and the picture that waa presented did much to point the way towards the neces- Static By DAVE I NDrHIIILL Don't laugh when you read this, but I waa once a buy soprano. Yep, t can remember one day when I was at ths tender agt of six snd stepped up on a chair, resched for the mike and tenderly aang the urrenl popular tune "When The Mimn Comes Over Hie Mountain" Although I didn't weigh In. drip ping wet, one quarter of Kate Smith 1 ettlmat edtonnagt, I managed to do a prettv fair Job. Even If I do aay so myself. Well, as a re ward lur my ef fort, my uncle took me out afterwards, got . me an Ice cream f ... 1 u it me to the wres- UNDERIHIX tllng matches. That was the last time I ever went to see the grunt and groan boyi, but not the last time I sang over the air waves. There wss kiddles' talent pro gram on one of the local stations Uist used to be on the air every week. Early Saturday mornlngi I would tuck a piece of sheet music under my arm, grab s street ar and ruin downtown for an audition. And quite often I would make the grade and be asked to return on Wednesdsy for the broadcast. ' Through my grade and high school dsys I sang In school and church choirs. And when I wen. to college I sang In a glee club, and even made cigarette, show and date money by singing In several church choirs. Now this Is not a personal eulogy by any means, but rather In way of an introduction to a program that Is going to be Insugurated over LW next Bsturday night Charlie McParlan. the Bedtime-Btory-msn. and Harwin Jewelers ara going to have a half-hour pro gram every Saturday night for kids who csn sing, play an Instrument or even recite some fsmous psssaee. The Idea Is to give these kids who hsve been practicing so hard at their music a chance to be heard over the nr. Idea. First of all it la a step in the rlaht direction towards developing of local talent. The kids will wora harder when they know there la a chance of getting on the radio. Mom and dad will be rewarded for all ths money they have put out on lessons, Just hearing their young ones on the radio. Further this step will have more deep and far reaching results in developing a love for good music in our youngsters. There Is no greater satisfaction that I know of than working In harmony with a group of Individuals, and that sauifactioo Is found in music. And further yet this Is a step toward development of good citizens. To reach a goal one must practice, and when one la practicing, aa these kids will be. they will be busy and out of mischief. It all adds up. Charlie waa saying tonight that la Is not a contest program. It is a program for any by pre-ichool and grade school children. The whole Ides got started on the night of Charlies Bedtime Story Christmas party for all his young listeners. Msny of them ap proached him after the program And It sure la a good and aald they would like a chance I to perform over the air. So there you are. A request spswned an Idea, and the Idea brought forth a program for the kids. Ths only apparent rules for par ticipation on the half-hour broad cast la that those wishing to par ticipate write In to Charlie at LW, and those children actually appear ing on the air be accompanied to the studio by their parents. Bo good luck to you kids. It's a lot of fun, and In later dsys you will really appreciate ail those long hours of practice put in learning to sing that song or play that musical instrument. MONMOUTH. Today we are apt to think of our National forests as containing won derful stands of timber. In reality however, by the time we actually came to the point of "locking the barn door" most of the finest tracts of timber originally on the public domain had eiready passed Into pri vate ownership: often by means more or less fisudulent which In those early dsys war. made easy by the laxnrss and the Inefficient ad ministration of the land laws. The tales of fraud practiced In those early days are numerous, often amusing, acta at which the public would chuckle. Public reaction of the time could be expressed very wen oy our modern expression ' what!" After all. we wanted to get rid of the land as fast as pos alble. At the time of Cleveland's first proclamation creating tor eat re serves there waa not much of i wave of excitement because In many eyea of the day the land held only second rate and down to prec Ucally worthless timber.
