The lower price will result from the reductions being made for some automatic transmissions. The cut aren't very greit from 126 to HO but many Industry observers are In them evidence of a trend toward lower car prices. Bo far automatic transmissions have been confined to cars In the middle and Higher price fields. In Uie last year or two they have be. come Increasingly popular. The de mand for them has grown so steadi ly that Chevrolet and Ford will hava them next year. Chevrolet will announce Its de vice soon after January 1 with pres entation of tu IBM models. Ford haa disclosed Its transmission, de veloped In cooperation with Borg. Warner, will be ready next aummer. Popular With but one or two exceptions all makes of cars above the low price group tow have some form of automatic transmission. In some Instances they have been made standard equipment, with corres ponding price adjustments. Where they are optional at extra cost public demand haa been ao great that relatively few cars have been turned nut without them. So the transmission price cut current ly being made amount. In effect, to a reduction In the price of the cara affected. That's Uie view ot many Industry observers. They add that had the 124 to 140 transmission price cuts been announced merely as reduc tions In car prtcee they probably would have gained much wider car buyer interest. UM Cuts In all instances the reductions so far announced affect General Mo tors transmissions Bulck'a Dyna flow and the Hydra-matlc used by Cadillac, Oldmobile and Pontlac, aa well as Lincoln and Nash under contract with CM. Bulck'a cut of S40 on lu Dyna flow brings the price down to SI 60, ' only a couple of dollars more than the price of the Hydra-matlc as used on Oldsmoblle, Pontlac and Nash. Thus perhaps a keener com petitive fight ma be expected be tween the torque-converting Dyna- flow type and the gear-shifting Hydra-matlc. Certainly OM t transmission divi sion la pouting out both typea In Increasing volume. The greater pro duction volume has been given aa the reason for the price cuts thus far announced. When OM returned to peacetime operations after the war It got lu output of Hydra-matlca up to 1000 unit a day. Now they are rolling out at around 3O00 a day. Bulck'a Dynaflow was Introduced less than two years ago, yet .more than J3S.- 000 umu alreaJy have been built. Contrary to some earlier expec tation the forthcoming Chevrolet and Ford transmissions probably will not be low priced units. Ford has aald the price will be "under 1160." Chevrolet has made no price comment, but mort guesses are that It will not be much under the same figure. Industry quarters have heard a higher powered engine will go Into Chevrolels equipped with the auto matic transmission. This, too, has not been confirmed at the company offices. crowds to see a new automobile In Hudson history," he aald..
