One elegant collection will be addressed to the Murrays' other daughter, Marcella, student ot Pomona college at Claremont, Calif., the other to Rodney who is a senior student at Ore gon State college, Corvallis. Lake o' the Woods Long Way Off But Spirit Near Bummer seems a lcnf "way off. but a highlight of the season m the good food on the beech at Lake o' the Woods. Susie can always tell how the summer went by bow many times the kids got to swim In the evening while the mammas grilled steaks, hamburgers, slapped the knit through the watermelon and then used a flashlight to find missing knives, forks, bathing caps, towels and the dogs. A dessert which was one of the summer's delights was baked by my good neighbor Marie Steams and we then and there decided that It was strictly for the holidays and a howling snowstorm outside. Try It with strong black coffee. It's rich enough to stand alone and oh, how good. Holiday Prune Cake (Mrs. Ralph W. 8tean) 14 cups sugar 4 cup butter a eggs, well beaten 1 cup sour milk 14 cups prune pulp 4 cup prune Juice 1 tea. soda 24 cups flour 1 tea. baking powder 1 tea. baking powder 1 tea. cloves 1 tea. cinnamon 1 tea. allspice Cream the butter and sugar. Sift dry ingredients add alternately with the milk to which has been added the soda. Add the prunes and prune juice. Mix well and bake In moderate oven about JO minutes In 3 layers. Filling 2 eggs. 1 cup sugar 4 cup sour cream 1 tea. vanilla 1 cup cooked chopped prune 2 T. butter Dash salt Cook together until thick enough to spread between layers. The red pe calls for Icing the top of the cake with plain white king but Su sie contends that if you spread some of the filling on top and then pipe around the edge of the cake a col ored or white icing It will be Just dandy. This cake is rich but mar velously good. leathern Pecaa Fie Basic Cookie 4 cup butter Two-thirds cup brown sugar, firm' ly packed Dash ot salt cup dark corn syrup 1 eggs, well beaten 1 cup pecans, halved 1 tea. vanilla Cream together butter, brown sugar, salt; stir lp remaining ingre dients. Line an 8-inch pie plate with pastry and pour In mixture. Bake at 40 degrees 10 minutes, then re duce heat to ISO degrees and bake 35 minutes longer. Most are illus trated in this holiday sec- finished tion to show the product: .Mincemeat Cookie Mrs. Percy Murray 1 cups quick or regular oats I cups nunc meat 1 tea. soda 14 cups flour 4 cup butter 1 cup brown sugar 4 tea. salt Work Ingredients Into crumbly mixture, add nata. spread one-half of the mixture into well greased pan and pat firm. Spread on the min-e meat sp-tnkle rest of the mixture over the top. Cook in siow oven 25 minutes or until nice brown and theie It a warm, snuggly aroma In the air. You knew, the holiday baking kind. Cut while warm and remove from pan. Raspberry Caroanut Cookies Mr R. E. Hooker Rub togethei: 1 cup flour. 4 cup butter. 1 teaspoon baking powder. 4 tea. salt. Moisten with cn egg. beaten, and add 1 T. milk if necessary. Cut with a round cookie cutter and dot ot raspberry Jam in renter of each cookie. Make a topping of this: cup sugar. 1 egg. beaten; 1 tea. butler and 3 cups cocoanut. Mix and spread around edge ot rookie, leaving dot of Jam in cen ter. Bake In a moderate oven. 3M de grees, until Just golden brown. Ap proximately 13 minutes. This makes three dozen cookies. Powdered Sugar Cookie Merlon Aibrecht 1 cup powdered sugar 3 cup flour 1 tea. cream of tartar 1 taca cup butter 14 tea. almond extract 14 tea. vanilla 1 egg. well beaten Cream butter, add egg and dry Ingredients. Form into small balls and press with a fork. 8prlnkle with nuts or put cherries on top. Bake in moderate oven until pale golden brown. Ceng Ban Mrs. R. E. Hooker 3 and 3-3 cups flour 4 tea. salt 1 lb. pkg. brown sugar 1 cup nuts, -broken 14 tea. baking powder 3 3 cup shortening 3 eggs 1 pkg. chocolate chips Sift flour, baking powder and salt. Melt shortening, add brown sugar and aUow to cool Add egg one at a tlm and beating well. Add dry ingredients, nuts and chocolate chips. Bak at ISO degrees for IS minutes, and after the last peek in the oven cut In squares. This make about four doaen square and are marvelous for packing In Christmas boxes a they have body and what body! Plum Pudding A floming plum pud ding catches the eye of Mortho Mane, Andy Jim and David as their mother, Mrs. Ross Rag land, lights the brandy poured over the fine, fruit filled confection cn the cover page of this section. Lucile Worner of The Pelicon Cafe baked the plum pudding for Susie Cookie, and cutting into the tradi tional holiday sweet was a wonderful experience for all, including the three little Roglonds. at- V FUled Cookie Mrs. Ferry Murray These cookies are fat and sassy and particularly recommended to boys with good appetite. Take: 1 cup butter or shortening 1 cup sugar 4 2up milk 1 tea. vanilla 34 cups flour 3 tea. baklnt powder Cream butter, add sugar, com bine with milk and flour. Add bak- confectioner's sugar and 1 tea. cln man. mixed. Makes about 5 doaen of the crescent, Iras of the stars. These are crhp and delicious with coiree. Chocolate Drop Cookie Mr. Ferry Murray 4 cup butter 1 egg. beaten 14 cups flour 3 aq. melted chocolate 1 tea. vanilla 1 cup light brown sugar 4 cup buttermilk 1 cup chopped nuts 4 tea. salt Cream ahortenlng. brown sugar: and egg. milk, flour which you've already mixed with sods, and then sifted. Stir In melted chocolate and nuts, along with the vanilla. Drop rrom a spoon and bak on greased sheet In alow oven, about 350 de grees. Time: 13 to IS minutes. Keep out the weathered eye. please. Then add 3 unbeaten eggs. 1 cup chop ped nutmeats. and 1 tea. vanilla. Sift together 3 cup pastry flour. 1 tea. salt, 1 tea. baking powder, 4 tea. soda. Add to above mixture. Divide the batter and knead each halt Into oblong rolls about three Inchea In diameter, cover with wax ed paper and leave In ice box over night. Slice very thin and bake In moderate oven for 10 mlnutea. Make 76 delicious, crisp cookies. Christmaa Cookies Mr. Vera Owen 1 egg 3 hard boiled egg yolks 4 cup sugsr 4 cup butter 3 cups cake flour 4 tea. cardamom 1 tea. grated lemon rind Separate egg and beat the yolk with grated lemon rind sugar and butter until ereamv. Add flour and spice and knead well. Cnlll dough. Roll out one-eighth of an inch thick and cut with doughnut cutter. Brush with egg white and sprinkle with chopped almonds and tiny red can dles. About eight will do the trick. 8pread with a layer of: 3 egg yolks, well beaten, one can of sweetened con densed milk. Juice of two lemons and a little rind, grated of course. Spread a layer of whipped cream, about cup will do, and cover with another layer of crushed gra ham crackers. Another eight you'U need. Keep In the refrigerator for at least four hours or more. This Is nice for s Christmas supper to follow cold turkey and aquarea of cold spiced turkey dressing. Fudge Bar Mr. Percy Murray 3 egg 1 cup white sugsr 4 cup butter, melted, with 3 squares bitter chocolate 4 cup all purpose flour 1 cup out, -'hopped 4 tea. vanilla, Dash of salt ' These direction are simple. Almond Crescents Mrs. Jk O'Neill Mix together thoroughly: 1 cup soft shortening (half butter) 13 cup sugar 33 cup ground blanched almonds Sift together and work In 1 33 cup sifted flour, 4 tea. salt. ChlU the dough, roll In crescent shapes or out flat and cut In star shapes. Bake in a 32S oven for 14 to It minutes. Cool on a pan and while slightly warm caiefully dip In cup ! with bit of candied cherries or citron. In double boiler until thick. Add softened gelatin to pumpkin mixture and cool. When It begins to congeal, fold In three egg whites beaten stiff with 3 T. sugar.
