Santa Has Great Toys this Year Br WALLACE MYERS I've just completed a round of the Klamath Falls toy departments and I haven't been so excited since Santa Clans brought my first bicycle! This year's toys are not only more attractive than any I've ever seep before, most of them are cleverly designed to be both entertaining and educational. - For instance, if a boy has a yen for say, ranching, there are amazingly life-like miniature models of all types of ranch machinery and buildings; sturdy little tractors with all the various type attachments; bams and other buildings; and fence kits for erecting corrals. There are wishing ma chine that actually wash small clothing articles; electric stores that will warm a mulfin but wont get hot enough to seriously bum a careless hand; kitchen cabinets complete wirh working models of the asual cooking Implements; and email sewing machines so efficient that one toy man told me mothers were getting them lor their own asm. Wheeled toys. . bicycles, tricycles, wagons, scooters and such. . ap pear unusually colorful and strong this year. It was Interesting to not how much more popular the Eng lish type bicycle ha become. The English, yon know, feature a front Wheel brake operated by a hand lever on the handlebars, while the American style uses only a foot powered, rear-wheel brake. Cycles with both the front and rear wheel brakes can be stopped much more quickly and should be a good deal safer In heavy traffic Popular What Is bound to be one of the most popular toys for the smaller fry Is the Bing Crosby tricycle; It vhas a sidecar, doubling Its playtime value. As I said before, one of the main themes of this year's toys Is fun while learning. I cited the ex ample of a youngster who had a turn for ranching. Well, no matter where the youngster's Interest lies, there seems to be a toy or toy kit that will both amuse and teach; Intriguing outfits for practically all type of scientific profession; log ging equipment featuring rugged lit tle timber carriers that hoist and carry loads between their high wheels; stores with counters, scales. cash register and stocks of mini ature replicas of familiar merchan dise Items; and restaurants and lunch rooms with soda fountains that dispense real soft drink mix tures. Sparta If the youngster's main Interest Is In sports, there Is miniature equipment for most any branch and unlike the stuff of prerlous years, the gadgets aren't mere toys. The big sporting goods manufacturers that make things for grown-ups are turning out small-scale stuff for juniors this year. For the youngsters who get a kick out of a uniform there are outfits for policemen, firemen, rangers, cowboys, soldiers, sailors and ma rines. And some of the uniforms, particularly the ranger and cowboy garbs, are neat and trim enough that Junior can wear them without looking like a fugitive from a mas querade. In keeping with this scientific era, electronics have come Into the game field in a big way; there are several new games that require skill in manipulating buttons and switch es. And of course, all the old fa vorites, such as, Rook, Flint, Mon opoly, Old Maid and such. Chinese checkers seems to be staging a comeback, with new plastic and metal boards. Don This year's dolls and accessories are so amazingly life-like that I al most felt like tiptoeing through the aisles for fear of awakening some ra uie sleeping midgets. RANDOM SHOPPING SCENES in Klamath Falls as the holiday season acts under way, find a number of attractive kids in the stores. And the old favorites, th trains, have taken on a new look. . . they're practically all dlesel models this year. There's more extra equip ment, too; automatic signal towers that throw switches, flash lights and ring bells as th train ap proaches: tiny trainmen with light ed lanterns: and automatic blocks that cut the power and prevent head-on collisions. For the tiny tots, one of the best things I found was a set of bril liantly colored plastic blocks that will stand bouncing on play tables or bobbing in bath tubs. Little Tss Th little one will get more fun out of riding in one of the new strollers, too; there are gay little clamp-on gadgets with spring bases that can be knocked about while Mama does her shopping.
