A Moscow audience Saturday night enthusiastically applauded the premiere of Shostakovich's new ora torio, "Song of the Forests." In it, at one point, the chorus sang: "If Stalin said It will be. -We will answer, leader. It is!" lives ua, the government n e w a paper, said the new composition marked a decisive turn In Shostako vich's creative work. "The composer strives sincerely to answer the demands of the party and people, entering on the path of the ldealful art of socialist realism." Lsrestia commented. (Shostakovich, after receiving worldwide acclaim as one of the two foremost Soviet composers. In February. IMS, was blasted with other Russian colleagues for "vi cious formalistie trends against the people." At that time he admitted his mistakes and said he would cor rect them. The seven-Dart oratorio was oer- formed by orchestra, chorus, a boys' choir and two male soloists. lsrestia gave thia description of ! the work, which has words by the niuwa jajt; c us rut LMnnswru;: "In the center of the oratorio are figures of Soviet youth: pioneers of Stalingrad. Komsomols and the So viet people. ... .the future Is felt In the clear, clean lyrical tone of the music and Its life-affirming pathos. The melodic figures of the oratorio are concrete and clear In their pure ly Russian character: dose in char acter to the intonation and rhythms of contemporary mass music." The paper had one criticism. It said Shostakovich had failed to fully develop the "majestic theme" of the third part of the oratorio. lsrestia said this fault could be overcome. (Unless Shostakovich haa depart ed from the traditional oratorio form, his new work la a musical setting of a dramatic text or poem, made up of recitatives, arias, chor uses, and orchestral numbers, but performed without scenery, action or costumes.)
