IT (-Earth. quake resistant construction for hotels, theatres, hospitals and schools In Oregon recommended by engineers. Directors of tht Oregon section of the American Society of Ctrl Engineers say building codes In Oregon cities -ar grossly negligent on ths subject of quake protection. Ths engineers released a special report prepared as a result of ths April 13 quake In ths Pacific North, vest. Secretary H. Loren Thompson said similar reports are brine pre pared by (fiUlatea In Washington. Three Taints The report listed three general recommendations. These called for a stats law requiring all buildings of public use erected tn the future tn be designed to withstand quakes: adoption of the quake-resistant pro visions In the Pacific coast building officials' conference uniform build ing code by all Oregon cities: and studies of ths vulnerability of exist tng buildings to earth shocks . Thompson said the city inspectors should recommend changes tn buildings if they ar needed to pro tect the public. "The accumulated data lead to the conclusion that future earth quakes of major Intensity In ths stale of Oregon ar very probable." the engineers' report stated. Negligent It said failure of tn engineers to inform the public and their offi cials of the quake threat to build ings would have been professional negligence. The report added that "from public safety standpoint, the most important buildings ar thos In which a large number of people will assemble." Included as ex amples were hotels, theatres, audi toriums, schools, churches, hos pitals, apartment houses and of fice buildings. It added Ui addi tional cost of quake-resistant con struction waa between 3 and I per cent over usual construction. Thompson reported that archi tects of the region had been Invited tn meet next Tuesday with the en gineers' society alien A. L. Miller, a University of Washington pro fessor, will speak.
