Tulelakc Gymnasium Being Revamped TULELAKE The gymnailum of the high school Is letting a fact lifting that will be romplrted by the end of the trek. To obtain more light, valla art being painted In colors ranging from white to deep green and a uew string of llghta Is being Installed. The entire floor of the high school building has also been Insulated. The Tulelake Cabinet shop was responsible for the insulation. Potato Seed Yield High for Next Crop An estimated 219.000 sacks of cer tified netted gem seed were pro duced In Klamath county this jrear, which will leave enough seed to plant about 11.000 acres next year after allowing for shrink and grade out, according' to Information re leased by the county extension of fice. Total potato acres re for the eoun ty was 10.600 acres this season. Cer tified netted gem seed accounted for 39 acres of the total. Potato acre age for Klamath Basin totaled 19,227 acres. Judging by past experience it Is ale to assume that half of the cer titled seed crop will move as table Car Shortage To Ease Soon, Says SP Head R06EBURO. Not. S U A South ern Pacific railway rice president promised yesterday that the short age of freight cars in Western Ore con would ease shortly. W. w. Hale. San Francisco, was her to confer with Rep. Harris Ellsworth. The congressman recent ly had asked the Interstate com merce commission to Investigate the boxcar shortage In Oregon. He said it appeared the railroad was discriminating against shippers In this state. Hale said empties were beginning to move northward out of Califor nia. He denied that Oregon had been discriminated against. Shift Blamed The railroad freight executive aid a shift In the lumber industry's , car type orders was partly to blame for the situation of recent months. Hale said Oregon mills t.ormallz used open-type cars to ship rough green lumber. About two months ago. he said, the mills be gan pouring in orders for closed cars for shipping kiln dried lum ber. ' Hale said the shift caught the railroad with "thousands" of open type cars on order or newly purchased. stock. Thirty-seven different grow ers produced the 929 acres of seed. Fifty different seed lots are listed and all lots showed less than the : one-tenth per cent tolerance tor leafroll at second inspection. All but six showed less than one-tenth per cent at first inspection. Unit planting Is considered a de sirable practice in production of seed potatoes. Seventy-nine acres of the total were planted In units. In ! ordinary mass planting, individual ! seed pieces of a diseased tuber are 1 1 scattered through the field while In : unit planting, all seed pieces of a tuber Infected by leafroll or other virus are concentrated. Grouping makes Identification of ; I disease symptoms in plants easier. ' Earlier Identification or removal is possible. A grouping of certified seed acreage shows 143 acres to be Montana seed. 133 acres ot Ash ton ' Idaho seed, and 200 acres of mis- : cellaneous imported seed. Local seed was planted on the 444 acre balance. Certified seed lists showing re- suits of field inspections are avail able at the county agents' office. ' Lots listed are eligible for certifica- tion tags now. Foundation tags will not be issued until test planting re- suits are received. Netted gem seed samples will again be test planted at Oceanside. Calif. Samples from Jefferson. Crook. Deschutes.' a nd Klamath counties have been gathered at the mamath experiment station. Plans for an intensive course In speechcraft are under wav In the ciuo. Pork, Sheep Club To Hold Meeting The Malin Porkers and Malin Sheep club will hold their first meet ing at 2 pm. November C, at the A. O. Scott home. Any child who will be nine years old before January I, 1950, Is eli gible to become a 4-H club mem ber. Children Interested In raising a hog or sheep are asked to come to the meeting so that the clubs may be organized for the new year. Par ents are Invited to attend. Mrs. Scott and Mr. Weatherby will lead the pork club again this year and there will be a new lead er for the sheep club. Week's Vocation For Thanksgiving TULELAKE Tulelake schools will have a full week's vacation for Thanksgiving. Teachers will attend Institute No vember 21-23 at Y re lea and school will be dismissed the 24-25 for the holiday.
