By DEB ADDISON YEAR alter year, for Lord knows bow long, we used to listen to Keith Ambrose give us tory eo fir prevention, come October and Fir Pre ventlon Week. We tat and fidgeted a little, and gometlme needled Keith a little. on hit annual plea for carefulnee Instead of carelessness. We all lay. "It won't happen to me." It can happen to me . . . and to yout Thlt la Fire Pretention week. Keith la (one. but Roy Row la carrying on. Roy la city fir mar shal. He's making the lecture tour this week, of schools, and adult organisations. The following is from Roy's typewriter. If you Ilk a thriller, read It. ADDISON "IRE! FIRE! FIRE! Those f words screamed In the night are blood curdling, especially if the screams are coming from the building you are In. The lights go out, th room la filling up with smoke, you start coughing and gagging, you try to find the door. Where Is that door? You have to have air; It Is getting harder to breathe: you are confused. Thoughts start going through your mind: Why should this happen to you, you are going to bum up, what a horrible death, you have to get out of that building, you are suffocating, you bump Into the wall, you stumble and fall, you get up quickly and go tn another direction. You bump Into the door. Thank heavens, you found the door. Now you can get out. You take hold of the door knob. It Is hot; k bums your hands. Suddenly you remember some thing: One time you had to listen to a fire pre venUon talk. It was boring. It would never happen to you. It always happens to the other fellow, yet here you are, caught like a rat In a trap. Remember that man said, "Never open a door that la hot If that door Is hot there Is a fire on th other aid that caused the door to become hot You cannot stand th heat If you open that door." Yet you think that you hav to go through that door; that Is th way you came Into your room. He said something about getting on your hands and knees tn a smoke filled room and holding a handkerchief over your not and mouth. You should also know another way out Oh yea. th window Is across the room. You crawl on your hand and knees to the window; you open that window. Fresh alrl Now you can breathe There are six firemen putting ladders up to the windows. Men and women are going down the ladders. Why dont they give you a ladder? You yell at them, cuss them; to with the other guy, you want a ladder, your room la getting warm; ar they going to let you bum; what la the matter with that fire department; they should have more firemen there: this Is a three-story building: a fine bunch of firemen, sending only six firemen to a fire of this she There comes a ladder to your window. About time they did. You go down the ladder; are you going to tell that fire chief a thing or two! oh, brother, the Salvation Army or Red Cross takes you in. gives you hot coffee. What's this, eleven people burned to death In that fire. You lost everything but your life. Remember that fire prevention talk, "this town needs more firemen, better equipment" You did not think so, you voted against It: It would raise your axes a few cents a year. Maybe that fir chief knew what he was talking about after all. This may happen to you. 28 people bum to death (mostly women and children) every day to th TJrdUd State. $2,000,000 worth of property burns very day. Carelessness I Get rid of thos fir haaards, get fire-minded, stop fires I These Days P By GEOKUI E. KUKOLSKY tIERRE DOS UTT Is a learned man whoa nam appears In "Who's Who" snd whose scholarly works ar listed In no bibliographies. In fact, Pierre Do Utt Is a planner who has devoted himself to th remaking of society and he Is not th first who tried It Th blessing Is that most planners only talk or writ about It and get lost In a mase of words, although Karl Man has become the Icon of myriads of the breed who quarrel to violently that the hop of society It that they may devour each other. At any rate. Pierre Dos Utt has at long last produced a book which contains his masterly plan. He calls It "Tanstaafl. The author sayt that it Is from th Babylonian, but philologists wtll Insist that It I Sanskrit corrupted by Low German. Than which nothing It lower, as everybody knows. How aver. It has meaning which I shall secretly glv you at th end of this monograph on Tanstaafl which I writ with th approval of ASOA. which Is whatever you think It It and I hop you keep It clean. The original "TansUafl la published by Cairo Publications which may or may not exist for any other purpose and which gives Its address at 30 8th street 8, E Canton. Ohio. Th 8. Dos Utt thereby paying his respects to th fountain of all knowledge, the seat of perfection, th apogee of conglomeration, even as Brahms did In hla First to Beethoven's Ninth. SIDE GLANCES OW. to get to the heart of the matter. Dos Dtt iinos me numan rare in a very sad state and has a solution for the problem, he following In a long line of solvers which Includes Hammu rabi. Wang Anshth. Akbar, Karl Marx and Henry Wallace, to say nothing of Aristotle. Plato. Henry Oeorite. and Leon Keyserllng. He states the problem tuectneuy. "And correlated with this Inherent urge to gain at the expense of others Is the deep-seated desire mi wiuw on our superiority, ror mis reason, we buy flashy automobiles, elaborate house, extrava gant clothes and sparkling jewels. "As money la the medium through which we are able to reflect our affluence. It at once becomes the final goal of our objective. Henc money Is the ultimate symbol of our Inherent disposition to km." NOW, if you understand that you can under stand anything and ought to reach the proper conclusion which Is to drop dead, aa Milton Berle would say In lingua Bronx, but Dot Utt puts It more cogently tn the following fore rules: "The basic human urge to kill for self-aggrandisement It very strong and It Is also very dangerous If It Is not controlled. Our recommendation Is to stimulate personal ambition, but to have It strictly regulated by a supreme state authority. Then the pattern of human advancement can be evenly regu lated for the benefit of aU the deserving." The volume Is amply supplied with charts and graphs out omits photographs as beneath scientific contempt Also photographic exactitude defies the artistic skill of the chart drawer who divines what figures mean by making them obscure. It Is thus ruled by the Society of Statistical Arts. It also is adequately statistical and footnoted and prove It point by algebra but omits astrophysics. HOWEVER, I should fall my readers were I not to point to one essential lapse in this otherwise colossal labor. On page 18, Dot Utt provide a chart to prov that horses, cattle, fowl and hogs have made great progress but that man has stood still. He baa not most supristngly, noted that a wingless fowl has been produced, thus Increasing the breast of this biped. This omission Is serious because of It Implications, for were we. by our higher lntelll gence, to produce an armless man. we should for ever save the human race from kleptomania, which is a short term for such creatures ss pickpockets, tax-collectors and subsidy hunters. Osteoarthritis or hypertrophic ar thritis really should not be called arthritis at all. It Is really a mild degeneration or wearing out of some of the structures which go to make the joints. It Is s sort of aging of the Joints which shows up first in those Joints which do the most work, like the knees, hips or fingers. The exact cause or causes of this condition are not entirely under stood. There may be an inherited factor, that la the cartilage and bone of people in some families may be particularly susceptible to early degeneration or osteoarthritis. Re peated Injury also seems to promote the development of this condition. Poor posture, disturbances of blood circulation, and obesity are otber conditions which contribute to the development of osteoarthritis. Accompanied by Stiffness The end Joints of the fingers fre quently become enlarged. This Is often accompanied by a certain amount of stiffness and soreness. though this usually disappears after the Joints have -been loosened up. These enlargement are very com mon In later years snd are celled Heberden's nodes. I The treatment of degenerative changes In the Joints includes gen eral measures aimed at relieving the discomfort and Improving the over-all physical condition. Local measures designed to relieve the In volved Joints and prevent or cor rect any difficulties which are pres ent are also used. Occupational strains should be eliminated when ever possible and posture should be corrected. Many people become unnecessari ly alarmed when they are told that they have this condition because they are afraid that they may be come seriously crippled. Osteoar thritis Is always a mild condition. The Doctor Answers QUESTION: la there sny special diet which can be used for an en larged liver? ANSWER: The liver may be en Urged In several different condi tions. Including heart disease, kid ney disease, as well ss diseases of the liver itself and other disorders.
