Aug. 53 MV-Rent control officials welcomed today the possibility of more money to enforce rent control ceilings, but still did not withdraw plans to abandon them in many areas. A trace In the acnafe battle erer rent control funds was reached yesterday. Senator Douglas (D III.) dropped his battle for more money when he was promised that the request can be renewed In January If the situation then de mands It. Housing Expediter Tighe Woods described the result of the senate fight as a "reaffirmation of con gressional support for effective rent control." He did not aay what he was going to do about his announced plans to lift eellinra In one-third of the areas which still have them. Woods had said such action would be necessary if his agency got no more money for the current fiscal year than the tl7.SOO.000 figure ap proved by both the house and sen ate. Douglas, In withdrawing his de mand for more, said senators of both parties had assured him Woods would get extra funds later if he needed it. Even it the senate should vote additional funds for rent controls later in the 11-month period which started July 1. the house would still hare to go along. New KUilS Students To Register Early All new students who plan to attend Klamath Union high school this fall and have not completed registration should report to the counseling office at the high school building next week. August 23-36. This applies to those moving t- the Klamath Union high school district since the close of school last spring. Graduates of Altantoat, Fair navea and Fremont eighth grades were registered before the dose of school and need sot report at this time. A few students of these schools as well as of Klamath Union high achoool anticipated moving from the district and did not register. These people should also report dur ing the week of August 23-28. Following the policy adopted a year ago the Klamath Union high school district and the Klamath county school system will adhere strictly to district boundary lines with the exception of a few seniors of each system who will be allowed to graduate from the school which they have been attending through out high school and KUHS soph omores. Juniors and seniors from the Keno area. Students are eligible to attend high school only In the district In which parents or legal guardians reside. Residents of noo-high school districts are free to elect the high school they prefer to attend. Freshmen at Klamath Union high school are to report Thursday morn ing. September 1, at 8:30 for one half day of orientation while the entire student body. Including the freshmen. Is to report at the same time Friday, September 3, for an other one-half day of school. Buses are to operate on regular schedule to bring In students and return them to their homes at noon both days. CHIEF JUSTICE WASHINGTON, Aug. 23 IIP) Delegates to Girls Nation the na tional citizenship school of the American Legion auxiliary an nounced today they had selected Sara Archibald of Grants Pass, Ore, as "chief Justice." Girls rep resenting nearly all of the states are here for their annual meeting. Oaf e September 14 was set as the of ficial date for the public hearing on rent control at Monday night's city council session. The confab of landlords and ten- j ants will be held In the city council chambers. 7 30 p. m. on that date. Landlords and property-owners crowded the council room last night and urged that the meeting be held as soon as possible. A tentative date of September t had formerly been set, but real estate ! men asked the hearing be changed because of a realtors convention in Portland on that date. Despite growing belief thai Klamath Falls would bo decon trolled by the housing expediter before any local action could be taken. It waa agreed that the city should nonetheless go ahead with Its plans. A controversy bobbed up In con nection with advertising for the de control hearing which, under the law, must be done at least 10 days before the meeting. Councilman A. F. Condrey frowned on the idea of the city standing the cost of advertising and expressed the thought that "If the people are sb anxious to hold a meeting to discuss decontrol, let them pay for the advertising." However, the other councilmcn voted Condrey down, arguing that the calling of such a meeting Is the legal obligation of the city under federal law and thus advertising money should come out of the city s coffers. Council President Darrell Miller spoke in favor of the city paying the publicatiou bill when he stated that "decontrolling would help the city's commerce in general, and not Just the landlords." i Miller cited the slump in building as indication of rent ceilings being detrimental to the city's commerce. In answer to Condrey 'a tntima- i tion that the landlords wanted to decontrol to enable them to raise rente, Malcolm Tearo answered caustically. -He don't want to raise rents; we merely want to get oat from under rent control so we can run our own business." The upshot of the argument was a vote to pull the advertising money out of the city's legal fund. Only Councilman Wendell Smith was absent from Monday night's j session.
