might paint.
She was raised In North Piatt
during the days when the Sioux In
dians still swam the river to the
white settlement, played with Buf
falo Bill's family and taught school
to save money in order to go abroad
to study art.
But "romance changed her mind.
She married. During the years that
ner 11 children were growing up.
ah found time to help raise the
funds for the first Presbyterian
church In a nearby town and to
build the first hospital.
At the age of 5. still with three
minor children to raise, the family's
finance were swept away, and Mrs.
ooker became supervisor of the II'
llnot Masonic home. Prom that
time until she was 70, she was In
charge of the children's home and
did practical nursing. When arth
ritis crippled her. she started paint
ing to Drear, the monotony of inactivity.
A huge canvas, entitled "Spring"
started then, I just now being re
touched. She had some instruction from a
member of the Chicago Art institute
but her talent haa been developed
largely by her own effort. On of
her prised paintings Is of "Sitting
Bull." She ha also painted many
landscapes.
Mrs. Coker came to Tulelake two
Tears ago and finds the beauty of
the West a temptation for her
brushes.
