The farmer knows, but perhaps the consumer dorsn t, that hngs do not move steadily to market throughout Ihe year. Marketings start the year at a very high level, then taper off in March and April. Then they spurt up In May and June, fall off again In July and August, only to climb again in the fall I'suallv prices of hogs and pork chops follow this same pattern. Right now. for eumple, housewives ae complaining about prices of pork. The reason Is the low level of marketings. Most farmers breed their sows so that they will farrow in the spruig and eariy fall when the weather Is usually most favorable lor pigs. What Is needed, says, the depart ment, is a change in the breeding pattern so that more pigs will be bom in the late winter and more In the summer and hence fewer in the spring and fall. Both the fanner and the consu mer would benefit, says the depart ment. The fanner would average out somewhat higher prices than he now gets because then no longer would be a sharp price break Just at the time when he bas the most hogs to sell. The consumer no longer would have to pay very high prices in the late winter and late summer because there would be larger sup plies of meat at those times. To encourage farmers to spread out hog farrowings and marketings. the price support guarantee is high est In those seasons when hog mar keting; and pork supplies are us ually the smallest. This variable price support pat tern has been In effect for several years. But farmers have had ae experience with it because prices have been far above support levels. The sttualioa is expected to be different in the fall. A big Increase in last spring's pig crop as expected la be reflected in a heavy market run of bogs In the late fall and winter In fact so heavy that it may poll price below government sup port levels. Government officials believe the experience of having to sell hogs under the variable price support standard will lead many farmers to spread their future pig raising operations over a longer period of tune. The department of agriculture has assigned field men to the In fested area In Oregon, and they are cooperating with the local farmers In their control work on their lands. ahlle on the range lands ihe gov ernment is handling the problem entirely.
