The Indian, who had a nam for the mountain before whit gaen became confused about It. called it "Mlalkstnl Yalna" which. In the Klamath language, mean a mountain with steep sides. That EPLET was eery appropriate, a ha been demonstrated this week, but we are glad white men didnl try to copy. It would hardly fit In any headline type we ban at The Herald and New, not to apeak ot trying to pronounce It. Levis McArthur "Oregon Geographic Name." the source ot information In this piece today, says that as far back a IMS, the mountain wa called McLoughltn tn honor of Dr. John McLoughUn, famed a the Hudson's Bay company factor at Vancourer who held autocratic power over all ot the Oregon country from 1(34 to 1M. In l3t. a book wa pub lished by the Rererand Samuel Parker, describing explorations beyond tha Rockies, and a map ac companying tha good reverend writings how the gaountaia under the name "McLaughlin." But later, people cot to calling it Mt. Pitt. Mc Arthur says this cam directly from the Pit river, which some of the early explorers called Pitt or Pitt as well a Pit. Tha river, which la a main feature mi nearby Modoc county, wa named for pit dug along it banks by the Indians to trap game, Peter Skene Ogden. Hudson's Bay man who wa here tn the eighteen-twenties, mentioned the name Pit river tn hi Journal, but called It Puts river.
