The aurroundintt district In Oregon and California, boasting fine sandy aoil. has provided the agriculture that la the main basis of the town's economy, although that is currently . helped by the presence of a lively little sawmill at the base of nearby Bryant mountain. It waa here that an Idea for one at Oregon'e finest small-eemmuni-ty recreation projeru took root three ar four yeara sgo. and grew ta fruition tn the beginning of swimming pool operation this year. Money waa pretty easy at the time, and It waa atreed by Malln's park planners that substantial anma roald k raised from private sources If a sound program rould be art up. It took aome let illation, which waa passed hy the lMt Oregon session, to handle the situation, and Malin proceeded with the organisation of a. park district embracing the town and surrounding are boasting a population of about IS. Some large contributions were made by successful farmers and others In the community, and scores of smaller donations inrougn special fund-raising efforts swelled the total from such sources to about 1125,000 out of the 5150.000 raised so far. A It-acre site was scire ted at the edge at town, adjoining the state highway a H enters from the north. Here a lS-arr development waa undertaken, and It Is now ta graaa with trees and ahruM growing, m backdrop for this picture, as aeea from the highway, at the pool flanked by a two-story structure housing dressing rooms, administrative quar ters, water boating and chlorinating equipment, spectators' benches and u branch of the library. A party of Klamath rails business men. organised for a aaluie visit to Malln last Friday, lost no time tn heading for this pool, and what they aaw there was no leas than an eve -opener. It was a warm afternoon, and the six 105 foot open air pool mas bobbing with tht heads of youngster! from Malln and such nearby towns aa Merrill and Tulelake. A few oldsters were swimming with the drams of bovs and girls, and tht wholt affair presented a splashing picture of wholesome fun Down fat the park, ta a sparkling wading pooL half a doseu tiny tats wart getting their feet wet under the watchful eyea of mothers. Tht swimming pool, it waa explained by Ted DeMerritt, secreury treasurer of tht park board, it run on a non-profit basis, the objective being to take In Just enough to meet current expenses. Adults pay 40 cents, high achool students 90 cents, grade and pre -school students 14 cents, and suit rental is 25 cents. The prices are aimed to let every body swim who wants to. and that la Just what It happening. Organised attendance haa started from Merrill and Tulelake. A total of 125 youngsters are tn swimming classes with the American Red Croat volunteers Instructing. Daily attendance as mounting and Malin'a swimming peel it rapidly becoming one at the most popular spots hi tht basin. Dick Hensel la chairman of th park board. M. M. Btaatny. one of tht member, was particularly active tn pressing the development of the park and pool and gave many hours of his personal time to the project. A. Kalina. long-time mayor of Malln who has now moved away. It on the board, and DeMerritt holds the secretary-treasurer post. Ward Stone t the paid manager of tht pool, and most other help, including me guaraing, is voiumeerea. MATOR of Malin la Emil To ell. and when the Klamath salute party arrived he and Mrs. Tefell entertained ta the bark yard of their attractive homo under aa apple tree. About u dosen of the community's lending eltitens were on hand to explain the facta about Malin. and subueejornt travels took the party ta the Loveneas Brother mill nearby, the Bill Dalian cattle ranch headquarters, grain and potato fields, the Malin buslnea district, and the railroad yards studded with potato storing and packing sheds, a teed plant and a cattle feeding layout. Malln hat been a heavy producer of fine potatoes for many years, farmers there like to plant early and get In on the first fall shipments to market, and often the first carload of th season move from Malln. Th farm lands there also yield heavy crops of hay, another Important export product. Barley, oats and other grain do extremely well there. Presence of heavy quality hay production In the area led to the establishment at Malin aome years ago of a large cattle feeding opera tion, with a feed chopping mill and extensive feeding pens. This plant fta now owned and operated by the Kittridge interests. A number of large cattle operations are located In the area." one ef the biggest being that of Bill Dal ton. whose beef animals move through Northern Modoc county range Including the lush grasses of Steele swamp. Dalton acquired tht holdings of Jesse D. Carr. big operator of early days, and the town of Malin, proper, waa carved out of this property. Malin'a business district Includes general merchandise stores, special ty shops, hotel, a modern show house with 27ft seats, garages, gaa stations, recreation renters, lumber yard. Its Industrial operations In clude a .cooperative cheese factory, long a major activity of the com munity, and a aeed plant recently art up along the track by Clover Adama. It la served by the Great Northern railroad. The Loveness Brother mill la a few miles out of town. It cut shout (5.000 fret per day. and when the salute tourists were there fine pon derosa logs from Timber mountain and Bryant mountain were going through th handsaw. A small community ha sprung up around the mill. Malin had the first Klamath county union high achool. built In 1921. It high and grade schools, located In attractive buildings and with pleasant surrounding grounds, are now part of the county unit tystem. The town ha an active Presbyterian community church. A constructive force ta the community for many years hat been the chamber of commerce. That organisation, headed by Jesse Smith with Mervyn Wilde aa secretary, haa 224 members, making It on of the largest civic organisations ta the entire basin. Chamber of com merce annual dinners, served by the Helping Hand, a busy society of Malln women, have long been hlghlighu of the year ta the Klamath country. Member of the official city family Include Mayor Emil Tofell, Coundlmen John Weir. Loul Lyon. Orant Anderson. James Ottoman. Charles Hamilton and Oordon Burns; Recorder Bonnie Stephen tnd Treasurer Vaclav Kalina. Stephen also serve a chief of the Malin city and rural fire de partments, volunteer group with two ngs located In an adequate build ing In Malln. John Reber, Malln business man, served several years on the county court, and Malln men art prominent In every county-side organization. MALI.V8 origin la one of the Interesting stories of the Klamath country background. On September 20. this year, the town will celebrate the 40th annlvessary of lla founding by t group of men of Cserh birth. The people hid formed a club through the medium of a Bohemian newspaper, Hospodsr. This group sent three scouts out from Omaha, Nebraska, In IMS. They rame into the Klamath are and saw the rank aagebrush growing along the eaat aide of Tule lake near the Adams canal. They aaw ducka on the waters of the Iske and deer In the nearby hills. They found It good, and sent bark the word that brought M colonists from many stales, west to Klamath. The group came by Pullman on tht Southern Pacific, tnd traveled the final mile by horaedrawn hack. In a short time rough homes began to spring up, and Malln was on It way. Those who remember those first day pay warm tribute to the memory of J. Prank Adam, early-day Klamath rancher and civic leader, for the friendly help he gave them. The going was not eaay at first. The pioneers had trouble with frost and rabbits, but rabbits also proved a boon. They learned the county would pay a bounty for rabbit ears, and big drives were held to trap the animals by the hundreds. Tht flesh provided food and the ears bounty money for purrhaae of needed materials. Two or three years later the farmers got their stride, the crops began lo pay off, and Malln sat on Ita way tn the prosperity thai marba it today. A. Kalina served a mayor for a quarter of a century and had much 10 do with the development of the community. Only a few of the original colonist remain, but their descendants and many later comers form tht population of solid, thrifty tnd fun-loving people who operate tht farm, Industrie and businesses of the Malln area. Malin ha been In the forefront of many county-wid and basin wide projects, and today points proudly to Its outelanding park and awimming pool as Incontrovertible evidence of Its progress.
