Congress Offers Business

A press club for Scout troops was
one of the principal topics of dis
cussion at a Modoc council Scout
commissioners meeting held last
Week.
According to Scout Executive Bob
Lamott, press dub plans have
worked out successfully In other
areas, and are primarily to stimulate
Scout publicity. In the Klamath
area, however, there have been no
such plans, and. according to La
mott. it shows the lack of public
knowledge of actual scouting activ
ities in the region.
The commissioner's meeting was
presided over by Paul Tanner, dis
trict commissioner. Also In attend
ance were Neighborhood Commis
sioners Dick Sinclair of Tulelake.

President Truman asked for re
peal of the excises on freight as one
of the measures to keep the econ
omy rolling in high gear and head
off a threatened business recession.
But Oeorge told a reporter any
such move now would cost the gov
ernment $400,000,000 revenue in a
period when Mr. Truman seems to
have resigned himself to In-the-red
financing by dropping his demand
for any major tax Increases.

peal of most of snch levies.
The finance committee already
has cleared a proposal by Senator
Johnson (D-Colo.t. to knock out
a long list of these taxes at a reve

Administration leaders are sitting
on this move, despite Its support by
Senator McOrath of Rhode Island,
the dooiacratlc national chairman.
Oeore said the tax on freight,
which adds to the retail cost of
about everything, "should be one of
the first to come off."
