The young republican president. Donald C. Walker, announced tne recall move after Sheriff M. L. El liott filed a tSOO.000 libel suit against the Oregonlan and challenged his critics to "go ahead and start a recall." County Democratic Chairman Nicholas Oranet rallied to the sher iff's defense, calling the recall at tempt "straight political Issue" and accusing the Portland newspapers of "persecuting"' the sheriff. Other demoeratle spokesmen, however. Indicated a possible will ingness to support the recall If assured that a democratic successor would be chosen. Owen Card, first vice president of the young demo crats, said he personally would fsror a recall. The controversy over Elliott, sim mering since he admitted making Incorrect statement about his back ground during his political cam paign, boiled over last week when he suspended Stanley MacDonald, the veteran head of the criminal Identification bureau in the sheriff's office. Other county officials charged that MacDonald one of the best known civil service men on the sher iff's staff had been Injustly treated. Both Portland newspapers attacked uie Meruit action in editorials. Saturday the sheriff tiled a $5.. libel suit against the Oregoniaa. No Permit Plan Works In Forest The "no eampfire permit" try out this year In Rogue River nation al forest seems to be working out well with full cooperation of the peo ple using the forest service recre ational facilities. There were more people at Lake o' the Woods over the Fourth of July this year than any previous year. District Forest Ranger Bob Cooper said, and they overflowed camp grounds and recreation sites but were very careful of their tires. This Sunday, Salvation Army camp and the Scout camp will be opened with Klamath Palls Olrl Scouts occupying the camp this next week, and Medford Boy Scouts opening the season at the Boy Scout camp. Medford Olrl Scouts will follow the Klamath county group in using the camp. Ar lie Mae Johnson, Malin, re turned recently from Camp Long fellow in Bremerton, Wash, where she completed a 10-day course In water safety at the Red Cros aqua Uc school. Mrs. Johnson attended as a dele gate of. the Klamath County Red Cross chapter.
