Almost 100.000 Jews are already
in Jerusalem. More are likely to
settle there. And the rest of the
Jews In Israel can to to Jerusalem
whenever they desire.

today. Opinions differ sharply about
the degree In which Mosaic tradi
tion should be incorporated officially

system and public life In general.

anti-orthodox. Moat members of
parliament are for mutual tolerance
and "everybody as he likes." a policy
of freedom of conscience and re
ligious opinion.
On the spot are the members of
the chief rabbinate. They are
called upon to decide such questions
as whether theatre tickets can be
bought on the Sabbath, or whether
it is permissible to drive even mili
tary cars on the day of rest.
Pious Jews wont travel by ve
hicle on Saturday or touch any
money. It Is even forbidden to
switch on an electric light.
Rabbi Maimon, the Israel minis
ter of rellslon. and other leading
religious scholars are following ad

Thus In many settlements Impor
tant farm work is carried out on
the Sabbath, the women do urgent
housework. In towns a few restau
rants remain open. Taxis operate

problems. Thry don't rare about
Sabbath or dietary laws.
But many others are asking whe
ther the chief rabbinate can still
postpone the official recognition of
a more free Interpretation of the
Mosaic law given 3.Se years ago
under quite different circumstances.

sity. Bernice is a graduate of the
