USDA Buys Up Surplus Spuds WASHINGTON. June 11 UPv The agriculture department reported Wednesday It has bought upwards of 700.000 bushels of surplus 1948 crop potatoes to support prices. The bulk have been bought in Alabama, California and North Carolina. Government buying in Virginia is expected to start later this month. Officials said prices paid have averaged about $1 a bushel. They said most of the govern ment potatoes have been of low grades and are being sold for live stock feed and for manufacture in to alcohol.
