June 1 (V-OII com pany shares took over leadership of the stock market today. Many raced ahead to new highs for the year or longer. Steel stocks also did well while aircraft and amusement Issues lagged. Activity, except for a few special oases, was comparatively small with the day's business running around 1.300,000 shares. There is no charge for using the canners: however, requests snould be placed a few days before needed. As a reminder, remember that all non-actd foods such as asparagus, beans, peas, corn, etc.. should al ways be canned with pressure. The oven method of cuinlng Is no longer recommended for any type of canning. NBC Heads Up In Voice Case WASHINGTON. June 1 (4i Rene Borgia told senators today that at least half a dozen NBC of ficials were thoroughly familiar with the "Voice of America" broad casts which have aroused a storm in congress. Borgia, who wrote scripts for msny of the broadcasts, said "It Is not true" that they "slipped through" without knowledge of Na tional Broadcasting company offi cials. On the contrary, he said, he ob jected often to putting In "cheap comedy" but was ordered to write them as he did. Borgia testified at joint hearings b'' subcommittees of the senate for eign relations and expenditures committees. The Investigation was started after the senators learned last week that the broadcasts told the world such things as "New Eng land was founded by hypocrisy and Texas by sin." The series of radio programs. called "Know North America," was broadcast by NBC last winter under contract with the state department. They were Spanish language broad casts beamed to Latin-America. Evidence In Melhase Suit Called In Stock records, accounts and min utes of the now-dissolved Wllhrow Melhase corporation were due to ap pear In circuit court Tuesday after noon, brought In as evidence In the equity suit brought by administra tors of the Oils Melhase estate to contest a gift of half Interest In the corporation made by Melhase to Mr. and Mrs. John C. Clrghorn In September, 1944. At that time. Mr. and Mrs. Cleg horn owned half the stork In the corporation and Melhase the other half. Principal asset of the With-row-Mclhn.te corporation was the building at 4th and Main which houses the Hull hotel. The estate administrators con lend that Melhase, who waa over 80 years of age In September, 1944, was under undue Influence In mak ing the gift of most of his property to the Cleghorns, while the defense, through Attorney A. W. Schaupp. announced It would claim that Mel hase was In his right mind and was disposing ot his property as he wished. The gift was made In memory of the late Charlie Wllhrow. the other man In the original corporation, Schaupp said. Mrs. Clrghorn Is a daughter of Wlthrow. John C. Clrghorn, now of Tule liike, was the first person called to the witness stand and he recited a brief history of the cororatlon and his connections with It. starting In 1933. and coming down with the figures presently paid as rent by each of the tenants of the build ing the hotel, a barber shop, ab stract company and Insurance ad Justors' office.
