Buying was on a selective basis but advances of fractions to around S points were well distributed. The revival In demand was accompanied by Increased turnover, with the day's activity at the rate of around 3,400,000 shares. Among the various Industrial groups most In demand were air lines, metals, oils and golds. Indl vidual Issues In many cases sold at the highest levels of the year or longer. Among the gainers were Schenley, National Distillers, Pan -American Air, Northern Pacific, V, S. Steel, General Motors, Chrysler (despite s strike), Studebaker, Pacific West em, Kennecott, Phelps Dodge, and Transcontinental & Western Air. The list lost considerable ground m the morning, continuing Wed nesday's and Tuesday's weakness, but later recouped all of Its losses. Among the few marked down at one time were Doublaa Aircraft, International Harvester, and Gulf OU. Polls will be open from 1 to 5 p. m Friday lor voting to elect board members for tlie Siskiyou Joint union high school, Tulelake elementary school, Wln ema elementary and Carr elementary. Interest has centered mainly around the two candidates from this section for the high school board, Dr. C. C. Dickinson of MfCloud, and George Tebbe of Yreka. both Incum bent, seeking re-election. In the Tulelake elementary elec tion, Douglas Thomas Is up for re election, the only name on that ballot Hold-over members of that board are Don Potter and LeRov Covner. In Wlnema district there have been no filings for the vacancy. Th decision will be based on write-in v-tes. Harry Mitchell Is the retiring member of the board. Hold-overs are Bert Johnson and W. H. May 20 Wv-The house passed by voice vote today a $207,930,100 army construction bill for improving bases and posts from iceiana to Hawaii. The bill how goes to a sennte. house conference committee to work out differences between the house version and a similar senate bill passed last year. The senate measure would authorise about $250.000000 worth of work. The measure does not make any money available. It simply author ized future appropriations to finance the project. The house voted to limit all family quarters, for officers and en. listed men. to 1.080 square feet. They would cost approximately $14,040 per family. Originally the bill pro posed up to $27300 each for gen erals' quarters. The bill will provide for 4J76 homes of three bedrooms each. POTATOES CHICAGO. May 20 (AP-USDA) Potatoes: total U.
