A custom applicator la being operated this spring by Bruce Campbell and Jim Hteppe. Campbell also operates a custom cattle spray outfit. Trials carried by the Klamath ex perimental station have shown 95 per cent control or better In heavily infected land cropped to potatoes after spring treatment. Drop Dangerous Ex peri menu to date Indicate that control efficiency drops appreciably with treatments lower than 400 pounds per acre. The 400 pound applications result In practically a 100 per cent marketable crop. Plant ing, should be delayed 14 days after application. Planting too soon after application results in poor stands. Considerable acreage of land In Klamath county is Infested with eel worm. Control operations by fumi gant application or cultural and cropping practices permit potato production ordinarily Impossible on infested land. Eel worm causes a rough, warty appearance in potatoes. Eelworm Infested potatoes are not salable. Original land infection is largely the result of ignorance and care lessness. Most infected lands were originally Innoculated by the plant ing of eel worm Infected seed po tatoes. Spread from Infected areas occurs chiefly from movement of Infected earth or infected roots or tubers. , Infected plant material may drift with irrigation water. I It has been established that two broods of nematode are hatched annually In this area. Length of life cycle Is affected mostly by temperature. Most rapid develop ment takes place at soil tempera tures of around 81 degrees. At 81 degrees a larva may de velop Into an egg-laying female In 18 days. One female may lay from 500 to 1000 egs. Larva must enter roots of host plants in order lo find food for development Husceptlble plants In clude clover and potatoes as well as most weeds, drains and grasses) are very resistant to nematode pop ulations. The theory Is a starva tion proposition preventing develop- ment of females and production of eggs. Complete eradication of eel worm under field conditions Is not pos sible. Control la costly. New In fection Is guarded against by all farmers familiar with this pest.
