Mary Beth Mln dn, extension specialist In the field of home management at Oregon BUM college, suggest that, In an swering this question, some of the following points be considered: Cost -.there Is a great variation In price In both automatic and conventional type machines, but the automatic rr.ay cost aa much as two to three times that of the conventional type. There may be extra charges for In stalling the automatic washer. Family Needs Is the family wash large enough to make the large In vestment In the machine worth While? Washday Habits Is the family willing to change Its washing habits. Use of the automatic machine frequently means that washday comes several times a week rattier than once a week. Water System Sufficient water pressure and hot and cold running water as well as adequate drainage system are necessary. Amount of Water Approximately 90 gallons Is used for one washing cycle. This la comparable to the amount used In other machines when fresh water is used for each load. About half the water used is hot water. Hard Water1 Automatic machines may become clogged with soap curd In a hard water area. Water soften ers are used to help avoid tilts dlf ftculty. ' Bolting Down Some machines re quire a special foundation and must be bolted down. Others have a spe cial spring action that makes bolt ing unnecessary. The foundation must take the weight and motion of the machine. Electric Wiring Special outlets are required for some machines. Amount of Soap This will vary according to the hardness of the water and the amount of softener used. However, the amount used for the two types of machines Is rela tively the same. Advantages of the automatic ma chine are: 1. Saves time and effort. 3. Uses less space since tubs are not neces sary. 3. Washing may be done In any room where water pipes and drain are available. 4. Is automat ically controlled, but may be set for varying water temperatures and washing times. 5. Is hyglentcally clean since fresh water Is used with each wash. 6. Operating cost Is relatively the same as for the con ventional type machine. Dewey To Visit Seattle On Friday SEATTLE, May 19 A' Oov. Thomas E. Dewey will visit Seattle Friday. B. Roy Anderson, chairman of the King county Dewey-lor-presi-dent club, announced Tuesday. He will speak in the Eagles' auditorium. Anderson said Dewey will come from Oregon via Spokane, where he is scheduled for an earlier appear ance Friday. Henry A. Wallace is scheduled to speak the same evening In the Se attle Memorial stadium. Public Shooting Grounds Get OK PORTLAND. May IB (A1 The state game commission reported to day It had renewed Its agreement with the ChewHUran Uuid and Cut tle company for operation of a pub lic shooting ground on ZX ranch. About 45.000 acres will be held as refuge and 3600 acres used as shooting grounds. The commission reported that re latively few hunters were on the iX ranch last year but their av erage bag was higher than on the more popular summer lake public shooting grounds.
