May 18 VPtA hard hitting selling drive sent the stock market skidding downward in the last half hour of trading today. Losses plied up to as much as 3 points. Volume expanded rapidly and for a few minutes the ticket tape lagged one to two minutes be hind floor transactions. Total for the day was around 1,700,000. Earlier Uie market had Just about held its own, with losses slightly outweighing gains. Many of these gains were wiped out as investors and speculators cashed, in some ol the profits which have piled up in recent trading. Lower prices were paid for TJ. S. Steel, Bethleherrl, General Motors, Chrysler. Goodrich, U. S. Rubber, Kennecott, American Can, Johns- Manvllle, Eastman Kodak, Santa Fe, K. y. Central. Great Northern Pia. and Union Carbide. American Telephone and Sinclair did better than most other issues. Cotton dropped sharply while trains Improved. Some rail bonds were under pressure.
