Mob Breaks Into Cudahy
Packing Plant, Smashes
Equipment, Kidnaps Men
NEWPORT, Minn., May H (PA mob estimated t 5IW men forced
it way Into the strikebound Cudahy and company parkin plant at
midnight, heavily damaged the interior, aet free arveral thousand dol
lar! worth of hors and carried away 30 plant workers as hostage.
R. J. Swenson, general manager of the plant, gave thlt account of
the Incident:
"About 11:15 p, m. "an estimated 200 men aome of them Cudahy
workera on strike entered the plant
"First the main power switch was pulled, plunging the plant Into
darkness. Then a room where some of our mrn were sleepinr was
entered. Cots on which they rested were broken up and some windows
am ashed.
"Locks on some of the stork pens were broken and 110 hois,
Talued it about $6000 were set free.
"A new ear belonging to one of the plant engineers was tipped
oyer and the windows of one side
and the windshield were broken,
"The plant boilers were turned off
but apparently there was no serious
damage done to them.
30 Kidnaped
"Then about 30 of the 50 or 60 men
who were on duty in the plant were
herded into cars and taken away,
i At 6 a. m. Swenson said all but
11 or 13 of the missing men had
been accounted for).
"These men were apparently taken
out 'Into the bills.' . A number of
men were hurt in the plant Two of
them were hospitalised and several
hare been treated for cut and
bruises.
"The entry into the plant appeared
well planned. We found a round,
heavy club that one of the men who
came into the plant probably used."
Swenson entered the plant early
thus morning with Sheriff Reuben
Grandquist. The manager said a
survey was being made of the plant
to determine the total damage. He
added that none of the damage
seemed to be of a nature that would
seriously Impair operations.
Swenson said he would ask Gov.
Luther V. Voungdahl to cal out
the national guard. "This has ex
ceeded the stage at which we can
work through court orders" he
added.
Sheraton, the famous furniture
maker, once designed an ottoman
with heating urns under it to keep
the seat worm in cold weather.

ing to officials of the festival.
The celebration start tonight
with the coronation of Miss Cherle
Davidson. Shelton high school sen
ior, as festival queen. Her crown
will be presented by big dus Ander
son. burly logger who plays the role
of Paul Bunyan In the festival.
The pageant Friday night will be
followed Saturday with a Paul Bun
yan parade, logger sports, street
square dancing and a boxing smoker
Sunday offers an air circus at the
Shelton airport
Hermiston Man To
Take Over Schools
HERMISTON. Ore.. May 14. (.1
Supt. William Bloom has been of
fered a position as superintendent
of the Centralla. Wash., schools, he
announced today.
He said signing of the contract
was only a "formality."
Bloom has been here two years.
A University of Washington grad
uate, before coming here he was
superintendent at Okanogan, Wash.,
and at Nome and Fairbanks, Alaska.
