D., May 11 The mott controversial figure In the Black Hills today la a 600-foot-talI dream In a man head. The head that holds the dream la on the shoulders of Korczak Zlol kowski, Boston-born sculptor and war veteran. The figure in the dream Is a 1 6 a n tic me morial statue of Crazy Horse, famous Sioux warrior statue ao huge 1000 people could stand on the chief s out flung arm. To make his drat m nnme true Zlolkowski must carve It out himself from Thundcrhead mou: taln. And that is what is causing the controversy. These "magic moun tains" were once sacred ground to the Sioux. Today they are less ven erated but no less loved by the white victors who have turned the Black hills into a year-around vaca tion land. For this reason many grumbled when Gutzon Borglum conceived the Mount Rushmore memorial. Most are glad now he carried It out. The Crazy Horse monument pro posal, however, is meeting perhaps even sturdier criticism than did Borglum's Rushmore project. "We dont want to tum our Black hills into a sculptor's gallery," said one elderly resident. Dwarf Rushmore Behind the objection also is a feeling that the Indians memorial might dwarf Rushmore. which is about 20 miles away, ethers think, on the other hand, it would serve as a twin drawing card for tourists. Few of those who question Zlol kowskl's plan question his compe tency or his couraRe. His head of Padcrewski was voted by spectators as the most popular sculptural ex hibit at the New York World's fair. He also worked for a short time with Borglum on Mount Rushmore. I went to see Zlolkowski at the spacious wooden lodge he designed and built for himself near Thun dcrhead mountain. The sculptor Is 39, fiery, boyish and determined. His hair is shaggy and tousled: his friendly grin spreads a dark moustache. He still wears the old GI boots he wore over seas. He likes to talk about his Crazy Horse memorial, and loves to bat down arguments against It. Hujte Cost "It has cost me $81,000 so far and I haven't put my chisel to stone." he said cheerfully. "But I'll finish It if it takes 30 years." Zlolkowski said he was first asked In 1939 by Chief Henry Standing Bear to carve the memorial because "we want the white man to know the red man had heroes, too." "So I came out here and bought a mountain." smiled the sculptor. "I may be bald and wearing a long beard when you come again." he smiled, "but this monument to the Indian it will be here forever." Completed, it would make the sphinx look like an oversized mouse.
