IT AHKMint,, tkltntl. Illvlil.., Orag.B Hlfbvr tanc.ll.a avaltm Controversy aplenty hu arisen as to whether stars may be glimpsed In the daytime by one who has ven tured Into the gloomy deptlu of a well. But why ruk "life and limb" In such a hazardous descent when dur ing the rest of this month Venus, the brilliant planet seen all spring In the western evening sky. may be spotted In bright sunlight? Because Venus Is In the west when glowing with Its nightly luster, we must not assume It Is always In that location. It rises In the east a few hours after sunrise and all day fol lows the sun across Uie sky. Chance daytime observations of Venus during the recent war re sulted In many amusing Incident. The writer was several times asked to determine whether this white spot In the sky was an Infernal device of Oriental design. On more than one occasion an airplane took off to shoot down the "mysterious balloon" floating leisurely In the Inter planetary spaces millions of miles from us but no direct hits are on record. When shown the rresrrnt-shaped Venus through the telescope, a husxy state policeman mopiied his brow and exclalmer, "Thank good brow and exclaimed. JhsMsesssaasia hanging In the same position every p.m." Venus Is most easily located from the shady side of a building, and when the sky Is clear and deep blue. It then apiiears as a tiny pearly white dot. Field glasses give a much brighter Image than the unaided eye. Often It la not readily seen until ones eyes are directed almost to the right spot, but when once sighted It Is easily kept in view. Kor those In mid-northern lati tudes near a standard time merid ian, Venus on May 9 will be nearly due south and very high in the sky nt 3 p.m. standard time M p.m. sum mer time i. The easiest way to find It is to start at the zenith and trace down and southward. The planet will be only 33 degrees south of the lentlh for observer at Vancouver, B. C. and seven degrees south at Los Angeles, with corresponding amounts for latitudes between. If the observer is east of the meridian from which his time i obtained, the south position of Venus will occur four minutes earlier for each degree east; if west, four min uses later for each degree west. This will seldom make a difference of more than 30 minutes either way. On May 18, Venus will come to the high south position only a few minutes earlier than on May S: on May 33. at around 3:40 p.m., and May 30. 3:20 p.m. The height In the sky will remain practically the same during all of May. This old picture was so interesting thot even though the print was badly faded with time, the editors decided to make a try of using it today. It shows a section of Main street in old Linkville and the old Morple ploce which stood on the site of the present Murdock building, between Second ond Third streets. The team troffic on the street ond femole Dedestrions j with bustles help to date the picture, which is said to have been taken in 1888. The iteomboot on the lake might raise a question as to thot date, an issue to be left to old-timers. The photographer who took this picture stood on about the location of tfie Klamath Furniture company on Main street, site of tfie Cranston place. The picture wos contributed to the Photographic History series by Mrs. Kenneth McLeod, to whom warm thanks are due.
