W ATKINS WASHINGTON, May S l Senator Morse of Oregon fired the word "reactionary' today at nine of his republican colleagues who are trylnr to avoid just such a tag on the party's national convention ac tion!. Morse said it actually was he who suggested the idea of having the senate's self-styled progressive re publicans band together. But, Morse told a reporter, not only he but four other senators ne had proposed as "liberal enough" tor membership were left out of the group's Initial meeting Monday night at the home of Senator Bald win (Conn.). Morse said he had broached the subject to Baldwin who "immedi ately" adopted the idea. Baldwin first Invited him to the Monday meeting, the Oregon senator said, but later came to him "much em barrassed." Others in the group had decided, Morse quoted Baldwin as telling him, that the organization meeting should be attended only by those who had worked in the senate with party regularity. This, Morse noted, left him out along with his nominees Senators Aiken (Vt-I. Cooper Ky., Langer (N. D.) and Tobey (N. H.I all of whom hare kicked over party traces occasionally. "It appears," Morse continued, "that the new progressives are pri marily interested in gaining control of the republican party and to adopt the reactionary principle of party regularity as a test of republican ism." He added: j "There is not a single senator among the self-tabbed progressives i who campaigned as hard, outside of j their own states, for Dewey in 1944 I or for republican senators in 1946 as I did. Hence I am highly amused when some of these self-anointed i progressives talk about working for progressive principles within the party." Baldwin, advised of Morse's re marks, said: "I have no desire to engage in a public controversy with Senator Morse." He declined further comment Leuml positions won In Yehudla.
