t f fACf EIGHT HERALD AND NEWS. KLAMATH FALLS, OREGON MONDAY, MAY 3, 19-18 Noiable Solar Eclipse To Occur This Week-End By J. IllKill PRVETT 4f4rHanir, r.lnlin nivUInn, Orta lllfhcr l;tfut'lin Syftlrm Thla coming week-end will bring notable solar eclipse, visible prin cipally from AMa and the North paclllc ocean. This will be one of thou "paradox" events which "starts the day after It ends." The moon shadow traveling caMward along the earth will first be evident at sunrise May t from Western Asia and the Indian ocean. Later It will cross the international date line at approxl- I mately 180 degrees longitude, where I the day changes to May 8. although : the hour Is later. Finally the lust of I the phenomenon may be seen near j sunset May 8 from Western Canada t and Northwestern United Slates. j This eclipse Is not to be quite total but of the type known as ' annular. ' This word comes from "annulus," meaning ring; and not from "an nual," or yearly. On this occasion the moon will be a Utile too far from the earth to quite cover the entire face of the sun. so there will be a thin ring of light still visible all around the dark circle of the moon. This weird, but beautiful, effect will be seen along a narrow path ex tending from the Indian ocean across Burma. Eastern China, Korea, the Sea of Japan and the North Pacific ocean to a point approxi mately 700 miles almost due west of Eugene, Oregon. Astronomers cal culate that in one section of the path near Japan the tip of Uie moon's complete shadow will come wllhtn five miles of the earl lis sur face, and Just possible still closer so that the eclipse may be total In that vicinity. Over extensive areas of the Arctic and North Pacific oceans and the adjoining land areas only a par tial eclipse will result. To those of us who cannot witness any of this, it Is still a most interest- nil v utomnTM ollS ones on r Geo. Lawrence 1 SADDLES E GUN STORE 7U MAIN STKKKT ing' event. Many expeditions from the United States are to establish observing stations In Burma, Slam, China, Japan, Korea and the Aleu tian Islands. By timing the exact Insiants when the different phases occur as seen from these various si a lions, the calculators expect to determine how far apart the sta tions are with an accuracy of about ISO feet. From this they hope to get more accurate data on the shape and site of the earth. The partial phase will be visible near sunset west of a line running in general through Redding. Calif.; Klamath Falls and LaOrande. Ore- J. L. DEAN Public Accountant and Auditor New Office Location 506 North 7th St. Phone 9346 gon; Lewlston. Idaho; Kallspel, Montana, and Into Canada. For those In the vicinity of Seattle who have level w estern hoi Iron. 0.46 of the sun's diameter will be collided at sunset; around Portland, o.ati. The maximum will occur below the horlfon and should dun the twi light somewhat. The nearer the ob server Is to the line mentioned above, the smaller the eclipse visible. Those east of 11 line will not be favored with any phase of the event. Little Ads get Big Results. Us The Herald and Newt Want-Adsl RENT A BIKE! Our timber, which comprises Oregon's most important industry, is endangered by utilization. In many cases this great crop is being harvested wastefully and without regard lor a continued supply. There are sections of Oregon where timber is being cut much faster than it can be replaced by natural growth. In short, our lumber industry living beyond its means. is Such a condition is a serious threat to our future prosperity. "Timber Exhaustion" in our wooded areas can be as serious to us as the complete exploita tion of minerals in the ghost towns of worked-out mining areas. It threatens the future prosperity of the business man, the professional man, the farmer, the laborer . . . and the lumber worker. It threatens your future no matter in what business you may be engaged. But "Timber Exhaustion" can be prevented if we follow the thoroughly tested laws which are already in effect. Forest Conservation, Inc. has been organ ized to furnish the public with reliable information on "sustained yield" timber management. During the next few months an educational campaign will be presented to help you understand the problems confronting Oregon's timber supply.
