ORECON FRIDAY, APRIL 30, 198 Extension Unit News Nothing But The Best Midland The final meeting of the Midland home extension unit wu held on April 27 at the home of Mn. Albert Bchmcck at 164S Mitchell. Twenty member enjoyed the very Interest ing discussion led by Helen Stlne on parent-adolescent relationship, with everyone Joining In the dis cussion. The group voted tills as one of Uie most interesting meet ing of the year. At noon a politick luncheon was lerved to all those present by the hostess assisted by Mrs. Everett Mathews, Mrs. Pat Hemann. Mrs. Francil Flowers and Mrs. Ed Poppe. After luncheon the business meet ing was called to order by Mrs. Albert Schmeck. Reports of all the committees were given. Tile of ficers, Mrs. Albert Schmeck. chair- man: Mrs. LeRoy Houck. vice chairman; and Mrs. Fred Milani. were unanimously re-elected for the coming year. Miss Stine installed the officers, and corsages made by Mrs. Roy Rowe were presented to her and to the officers. It was voted by mm to award a trip to 4-H summer camp to a deserving Midland 4-H club member. Mrs. Fred MilaiU. . Mrs. Leon Andrieu and Airs. George Andricu were appointed by the chairman to make the award. Many of the members brought their hobby work for the display. Mrs. Albert Schmeck. Mrs. Fred ' Milan! and Mrs. LeRoy Houck will j be In charge of the display on labor saving devices for the kitchen. This ; was selected in the March meeting , lor the unit's display for the Home- makers Festival. Members brought j pictures of their families for the year book. Outlook For US Fruit Export NG WASHINGTON, April 30 (Pi The agriculture department said Thursday prospects of American fruits regaining prewar markets In Europe are not very bright. This statement was based on a aurvey made recently by F. A. Mote, a department fruit marketing spe cialist. Before the war. exports of fruits and fruit products averaged $89. 000.000 annually, mostly to Europe. Mote said a shortage of dollars may lead Europe to seek fruit sup plies elsewhere. He said European governments look upon fruit as a luxury and will tend to use what dollars they have only for purchase of essential foods and raw materials. Confederate Flag Needed Again BALTIMORE. April 30 i,P This city is advertising for Confederate battle flags but hold your fire, Yanks. There's no rebirth of the Civil war in prospect: it's just the monument city getting ready to dedicate an other statue. This one is an enormous Job In brome. depicting Generals Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson part ing on the night before the battle of Chancellorsville. where Jackson was shot accidentally by one of his own troops. The statue is to be dedicated Sat urday. Just 85 years after the battle, and the Confederate battle stand ards are wanted to decorate the site of the unveiling. Navy Task Force Reaches Norway BERGEN. Norway. April 30 i.-P A U. S. navy task force headed by the carrier Valley Forge reached Bergen Thursday on a goodwill visit t Norway. Guns of the fortress Bersenhus returned the ships' sa lutes. Norwegian military and ci vilian officials met the ships' offi cers. The American sailors and ma rines started a snowball fight on the piers. Bay Area Lawyer Buys PM interest NEW YORK. April 30 (. A Wes ' coast attorney and a Manhattan newsman have bought controlling in terest in PM. eight-year-old New- York City newspaper. The sale to Bartley C. Crum. 47. San Francisco lawyer, and Joseph Barnes, 40. foreign edttor of the New York Herald Tribune, was an nounced last night by PM publisher Marshall Field III. Field said he would retain a minority Interest. The PM unit of the CIO New York Newspaper Guild Indicated its ap proval of the transaction. The unit had opposed the proposal of a pre vious prospective purchaser. Clinton 1 D. McKinnon of San Diego. Calif., for a 90-day period in which he might hire or discharge employes. Field notified the PM staff last March 13 that he planned to dis continue publication. rour-M NewSj Busy Bee Club The Busy Bee club of Mulln had Its meeting on Tuesday afternoon as usual. Members got some pniicr and practiced the speech for 4-11. It waa written on per, Lynette Lyons writing for Ucraldme llrn- drix and Matte Rogers writing for Luclle Weber. Then the members went to look for some cardboard paper to pin the needle case, pin cushion, luncheon cloth and head scarf on, to put on an eshlblt tor the fair in Klamath Falls this com ing Thursday. Friday and 8lurdiy. Cleralillne Hendrlx, reimrtcr. Shasta 4-11 Club Phyllis Park. Lois Fanner and David Darcell represented the Shasta 4-H Health club at the county spring fair. Since David Darrcll was absent from the Monday meeting at the Shasta 4-11 Health club April 35. Patsy Lee. vice president, took his place. Phyllis Park reported on the county 4-H spring tulr to the mem bers who could not attend It. Miss Ellen Brown talked about cereal, fruit, bread, butter and fruit Juice for the basic breakfast.
